While watching The Today Show recently, I found myself crying after seeing an interview with Savannah Guthrie and Lauren Scruggs. Ms. Scruggs is the young model who was involved in a horrific accident last December. She unknowingly walked into a plane propellor, losing an eye and a hand. I remember hearing about the accident and praying for Ms. Scruggs and her family. I was moved by her parents profession of their faith and how they even started a blog asking for prayer and giving updates on their daughter’s progress. Her recovery is nothing short of a miracle.
During The Today Show interview, which took place in London immediately following the Olympics, Ms. Scruggs talked about how much the Olympic athletes inspired her. She indicated that Gabby Douglas, the gold medal gymnast, was her favorite and she enjoyed watching her compete with such strength and grace. Unbeknownst to Ms. Scruggs, Gabby Douglas was just off camera and she walked out to meet her. I was literally mesmerized watching these two wonderful young women meet for the first time and simply encourage each other. Ms. Douglas said that it has always been her prayer to inspire a nation and to know that she was an inspiration to Ms. Scruggs touched her deeply.
When the interview began, I did not expect to be inspired myself – but I certainly was. I thank God that Lauren Scruggs is doing so well and I pray that she will continue to grow stronger physically and spiritually. I also thank God for Gabby Douglas. I thank Him for answering her prayer – for she has definitely inspired a nation and beyond.
