The USA men’s basketball team at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London includes a dozen of the richest basketball players in America, including LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. Team USA began its quest for Olympic gold on July 29 and as these photos show, the NBA superstars showed up to play to defend their Olympic gold medal.
Men’s basketball Team USA definitely has a tough task ahead of it. The players are coming off a taxing and condensed season that ended just six weeks ago. All eyes will be on LeBron James, the regular season and Finals MVP. The players must overcome fatigue to take home gold one more time, twenty years after the original Dream Team hit the courts in 1992, led by Michael Jordan and eleven future Hall of Famers. The original Dream Team won all six of its games by an average of more than 43 points and went on to win Olympic gold.
In its first game in the 2012 Olympics, Team USA took on Team France, led by San Antonio Spurs star Tony Parker. By the final whistle, Team USA easily defeated France by a score of 98-71. Kevin Love racked up 14 points, while Kobe Bryant scored ten for Team USA, which led by only one point after the first quarter. However, six three-pointers and a strong second half added up to a 27-point victory over France, a medal contender with six NBA players.
The nationally televised game aired live this morning on NBC. Men’s basketball is one of the more popular events of the 2012 Olympics, especially since this year may be the last for superstar teams like this one and the original Dream Team. NBA commissioner David Stern has hinted that the All-Star round-up may end after London and give way to a system similar to the one used for Olympic soccer, which has an age limit of 23 (with the exception of three overage players). Mike Krzyzewski, national coach for Team USA, has already stated that this year will be his last to coach an Olympics team.
Because of this, the men’s basketball Team USA is driven to succeed in their quest for gold at the 2012 Summer Games in London. Below are the superstar players on the 2012 men’s basketball Team USA.
- Kobe Bryant (LA Lakers)
- Anthony Carmelo (New York Knicks)
- Tyson Chandler (New York Knicks)
- Anthony Davis (New Orleans Hornets)
- Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder)
- Andre Iguodala (Philadelphia 76ers)
- LeBron James (Miami Heat)
- Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves)
- Chris Paul (LA Clippers)
- Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder)
- Deron Williams (Brooklyn Nets)
