Conservative Angelinos often feel a bit outnumbered, especially when they are somewhere like Hollywood. So it seemed a bit unusual to be invited to attend a VIP screening of Obama’s America: 2016 in the heart of one of Southern California’s most left-leaning communities.
The thought-provoking film was screened for a packed and enthusiastic audience at the Harmony Gold Theater on Sunset Boulevard on Wednesday night. It received a similar reception days earlier in Texas. The film will be released July 27 and will be controversial at best during this election season.
Obama’s America: 2016 is based on Dinesh D’Souza’s book The Roots of Obama’s Rage. The documentary gives us a glimpse of what made the man who is now the 44th president of the United States, or perhaps put more accurately, a glimpse of what in Obama’s upbringing may be the source of his contempt for America and its people.
Obama is unlike any previous Democratic president. Even our most left-leaning presidents of the past had a love for America and a desire to see the country prosper. D’Souza argues throughout the film that Obama is different. He is anti-colonial and wants to reduce America’s stature as a world power. He does not apologize for his Socialist agenda nor for his anti-American views.
The film asks what 2016 will hold for us if Obama is elected to another four-year term. While birthers continue to argue about Obama’s birth certificate, 2016 provides viewers with legitimate and startling reasons to be concerned about a second Obama term.
D’Souza, along with producer Gerald Molen of Jurassic Park, Rain Man, Hook and Shindler’s List fame, created a fast-paced movie filmed on four continents and combined with news footage, interviews, and most hauntingly, excerpts of Obama reading passages from his own book Dreams from My Father. It paints a picture of a man possessed and obsessed by his past to undo centuries of colonialism and American greatness.
At the conclusion of the film, D’Souza and Molen were on hand to take questions from the audience. D’Souza was asked about Obama’s birth place. He reminded the audience that not only is there a birth certificate, but two newspapers independently reported Obama’s August 4, 1961, birthdays after it occurred.
D’Souza was also asked about suggestions that Obama is Muslim. He said that both of Obama’s parents and his step father were atheists. He opined that Obama is not Muslim. He went on to say that his affiliation with Dr. Jeremiah Wright has more to do with Wright’s anti-colonialism views than anything else.
Obama’s America: 2016 is a must-see for those who say they are staying away from the polls if Ron Paul’s name is not on the ballot or have declared they are writing in “Jesus” if Mitt Romney is the Republican nominee. Ultra conservatives and Libertarians may be concerned about a moderate Mormon Republican winning the White House. They should be more concerned about a president with an agenda that will destroy this nation through taxation and disarmament.
Dinesh D’Souza was born in India and moved to the United States to attend Dartmouth University. He became a policy analyst in the Reagan White House. In addition to The Roots of Obama’s Rage, he also penned What’s So Great about Christianity and Letters to a Young Conservative.
