If you love all water sports and action sports (like bungee jumping and hang gliding) and you are looking for an excuse for “one last blast of summer” weekend family trip then consider a jaunt to the Great Miami River Days event (one of the largest water events in the United States) on Saturday, September 8 and Sunday, September 9 in Hamilton, Ohio. It is approximately a 4 hour drive from Cleveland.
Great Miami River Days Located along the banks of the Great Miami River, the Great Miami River Days was created to encourage residents and visitors to appreciate this natural resource and become more involved in protecting it as a quality water area for boating, fishing and preserving local wildlife.
This 2-day family-friendly event features a wide variety of action-packed water activities in addition to offering educational historical reenactments.
Among the water sports events will be a water ski show, Tunnel Boat races, a jet ski show, wake boarders, rowing, pontoon rides and Drag Boat Races (where the boats could reach speeds of 160 MPH). Make sure you witness Team Fastrax Ski-Diving Team delivering the American Flag to the festival.
The Great Miami River Days will also feature hang gliding demonstrations with the gliders soaring more than 300 feet above the crowd and landing on the Great Miami River. And don’t miss the river landings of a Seaplane (airplane with floats) delivering special guests to the festivities.
Children’s activities include live animal displays, a scavenger hunt, a local birds of prey exhibit, water related crafts, educational games, a wetland interactive model and performances by Natural Science Song & Dance Man Chris Rowlands.
Visitors will be able to meet historical re-enactors including the Miami Valley 1700-1865 Re-enactors Company, the 5th Ohio Light Artillery, Confederate States Marines, 5th Texas Company D and Ladies Living History. These living history costumed re-enactors (pioneers, military and Native Americans) will give demonstrations including bead work, wood carving, flint napping, drumming, candle making, building shelters and fire starting.
Free musical entertainment will be offered throughout the event including a performance by Southern Rock band Molly Hatchet.
