It’s been awhile since Mayor Alvin Brown introduced the Achievers For Life Program to the attendees of the Mayor’s Inaugural Interfaith Breakfast that was held back in April of this year. During that time, Mayor Brown asked for the citizens of Jacksonville to volunteer their time to help a child to achieve their life’s purpose by being “mentors” to one student. Below you can read how you too can devote one hour a week to assist a child during the 2012 – 2013 school year to reach their potential.
About the Program: The Achievers For Life Program provides sixth-grade, at-risk students at Arlington, Fort Caroline, Matthew Gilbert, Northwestern, Jeb Stuart and Jeff Davis Middle Schools integrated, safety net services for the family and the student. This holistic approach is critical in stabilizing the family so that the child comes to school prepared to learn. Every family and student receives services and guidance from a Family Advocate, an Achievement Advocate and a caring mentor. The focus of Achievers For Life is to develop skills and behaviors among targeted students so that they will be successful in school and life.
Students: Students are selected in the 6th grade. They exhibit risk factors of school disengagement such as excessive absences and low GPA/FCAT scores.
Family Advocates: Family Advocates from Jewish Family Community Services meet with participating families regularly, helping them to progress toward family social goals and connecting them with social services as appropriate.
Achievement Advocates: Achievement Advocates from Communities in Schools meet with students regularly, encouraging them to reach mutually established goals, while closely monitoring attendance, classroom behavior and academic progress.
Achievement Mentors: Achievement Mentors are caring adult volunteers from the community who meet with their student on campus, one hour per week. They provide guidance, friendship, tutoring, and hope.
