Animals aren’t much different than humans in their need to feel like their life has meaning and purpose. Imagine if all day long all you did was sit around the house waiting for your human to come home; many might joke that it would be the perfect life, but day in and day out, it surely could become boring and futile. Just as we humans want to know our life matters and that we bring something more to the world that just simply existing, so do our pets and the animals around us.
When you are ready to assign a responsibility or job to a pet, first look at their existing behaviors to see if they’re already doing something that would be natural for you to assign as a task. If a cat you have seems to always find the bugs in your house then you have your pest control right there.
Once you have determined what duty your pet will have you need to connect with them and asked permission, most will agree willingly, and then assign the role that both of you have agreed upon. If you feel you have a negative response or push back form your pet simply ask why and trust your intuition to figure it out. You might just need to clarify somethings as you would any worker, or child, that you are trying to get to do a new chore.
If you have not read the previous columns on how to connect to your pet or how to get your pet to do what you want, it is encouraged to do so to get a better understanding of communication.
In the attached video you will see how Toby the cat’s natural cleaning abilities, as demonstrated on Sheldon, were used for a new family member Sebastian, a Himalayan flame point. Toby, very quickly, took to cleaning the dark goop around Sebastian’s eyes that is produced from a short nose and bacteria build up.
