In 2006, actor Blake Berris first showed up on NBC’s daytime drama, “Days of Our Lives” as twenty-ish Nick Fallon, returning to the fictional town of Salem, USA in an effort to get to know his relatives and the former hometown of his parents, Jessica Blake and Joshua Fallon. His mother, Jessica is the daughter of former Salem baddie, Alex Marshal and former nun, Marie Horton, daughter of Salem patriarchal couple, Tom and Alice Horton. Nick’s father, Joshua is the son of former Salemites, Sunny Chisolm and Dr. John Talbot.
Upon Nick’s debut in Salem, he fell in with the teen set, including his cousin, Abby Deveraux, then played current “Pretty Little Liars” star, Ashley Benson. It wasn’t long before he fell for Abby’s friend Chelsea Brady.
Nick proved his smarts when he landed a job as a lab tech at Salem University Hospital. While there, he was instrumental in developing an antidote for ailing Dr. Kayla Brady Johnson, who had contracted a rare biological toxin.
Still in pursuit of Chelsea, Nick ditched his glasses and pocket protector and became a sharp dressed man about campus. He also created an online altar ego, ‘Lonely Splicer’ and began IM’ing Chelsea by way of her online username, ‘Angry Angel’.
Unaware Nick and ‘Lonely Splicer’ were one-and-the-same, Chelsea even asked computer savvy Nick to help her discover ‘Lonely Splicer’s true identity. Outsmarting Chelsea once again, Nick created a second online persona, ‘Shane Patton’ supposedly confession his identity, but instead of offering a photo of himself, he supplied a pic of Dr. Rebert, his boss at the University. Lonely Splicer’s real name. Nick made up the name Shane Patton and emailed Chelsea a picture of his boss, Dr. Rebert. Certain that Shane Patton was the man for her, Chelsea set up a date to meet.
Nick decided he’s head Chelsea off at her house and confess everything, but he instead encountered her tipsy and depressed mom, Billie Reed. In true soap fashion, Billie seduces the young Nick, but the two immediately realize their mistake and vow to keep the occurrence from Chelsea.
Because of the indiscretion, Nick opts to befriend Chelsea. Eventually the two traveled to Canada to help their friends Shawn and Belle, who are on the run from Philip Kiriakis. During their adventure, the two grew closer together, so Nick decided to come clean about the whole ‘Lonely Splicer’ thing. Chelsea didn’t take the revelation well and decided to sever all ties with Nick.
In what seemed like an effort to get back at Nick, Chelsea took a job at the hospital lab with Dr. Rebert, not knowing he was bad news. Nick soon realized that Dr. Rebert was preying on young women and he saved Chelsea from being raped by the pervy doctor.
With their relationship on the right track, it wasn’t long before Chelsea realized the truth about her mother and Nick having a single night’s indiscretion.
Nick’s next storylines involved more misadventures at the lab. First, at the request of his cousin Lucas’ wife, Sami Brady, Nick helped falsify an amnio test making it look like Lucas was the father of Sami’s baby. Then, Nick stole a hairbrush that had been found at the scene of Bo and Hope’s house fire to clear Chelsea of the crime.
That latest bit of deception restarted their relationship.
Nick then befriended a pregnant Willow Stark. He helped her out financially and found her a place to live. Of course Willow turned on Nick and soon began to blackmail him, threatening to expose his involvement in the whole Chelsea hairbrush incident. With hairbrush in hand, WIllow set up a meeting with Nick at the beach, hoping to gain control of the young genius’ assets. The two began to struggle and Willow fell and hit her head. She died as a result of the injury, but Chelsea came to Nick’s aide in clearing him of Willow’s death.
Nick and Chelsea shared their first intimate moment, but Chelsea was less than satisfied, a detail that would play into her future actions.
The hairbrush would again become the bane of Nick’s existence when Chelsea’s grandmother, Kate Roberts blackmailed him into faking a DNA test to show that EJ was the father of Sami’s twins, instead of her son, Lucas.
Finally decided to get some leverage himself, Nick discovered that Lucas was the real father of Sami’s twins. Hoping to do the right thing, he went to Sami’s apartment to reveal his findings, but instead, found a bouquet of flowers with a bomb inside. He saved Sami, but suffered a concussion in the process. Oh, yeah, said concussion also resulted in temporary amnesia, thus making him forget the true birthright of Sami’s twins.
Still recovering from the blast, Nick headed to Vegas in pursuit of Chelsea, who he found in a hot tub with Jett Carver. When Nick won big in the casino, thanks in part to his genius mind, he decided to propose to Chelsea in hopes of a Vegas wedding. She said no and Nick rebounded quickly and in a moment of ‘what happens in Vega’, met and married an opportunistic beauty named China Lee. Thanks in part to his concussion, when he awoke the next morning in his marriage bed, he didn’t remember the wedding at all.
Nick and Chelsea made up only to have China demanded $25,000 for an annulment in an effort to have a little money for her sons, Artemis and Demarquette. Hoping to win enough to get rid of China and help the boys, Nick hit the tables in Vega, but lost it all. China had a change of heart and agreed to get an annulment without a cash payout. Still needing money, China was soon arrested for solicitation. Having already developed a bond with the boys, Nick agreed to take care of the boys during China’s month-long lock-up. Overwhelmed by the additional responsibility of the boys, Chelsea left Nick once again. During the month with the boys, Nick realized he could be responsible, something Chelsea also took note of, once again renewing their friendship.
It wasn’t long before a man named Umar Abboud came to Nick’s place looking for China’s boys. Nick refused to turn the boys over to him even though Umar warned Nick that the boys were the son of a powerful man and that their lives were in danger. When Umar accosted him and demanded the boys, Nick’s cousin Jeremy, who was on the run from the cops and staying with Nick and the boys, came to their rescue, fighting off Umar.
Chelsea soon got embroiled in the storyline concerning the boys when she was kidnapped by another man sent to retrieve the boys. Interestingly, it was Umar who came to the rescue when he revealed that the boys’ were no longer in danger, and they could return to their country. Nick shared an emotional good-bye with the young boys and Chelsea finally came to her senses, realizing she really did love Nick.
Chelsea and Nick’s next adventure found them mixed up in uncovering evidence to prove that Ford Decker was the Salem University campus rapist. Chelsea and her sorority girls decided to take matters in their own hands and lured Ford to the sorority house to set him up. Things went wrong and Ford fell to his death after being pushed by Chelsea.
When she revealed the truth to Nick, he told her to go to the cops. When she refused, they began to drift apart. Eventually, Chelsea did the right thing, but by that time, Nick had began emerging himself in a grant for alternative fuel research. Chelsea too was distracted, this time by her father, Bo Brady’s illness.
Nick’s research was compromised by Max Brady, who stole a page out of his journals, then altered key calculations. As for Chelsea, she became an organ donor to save her father, Bo, and met Dr. Daniel Jonas in the process. Chelsea developed feeling for Dr. Jonas, but Nick let the Dr. know he was still in love with her and to step back.
Chelsea endured complications following the organ donation, but Nick remained by her side. When Chelsea learned she could never have children due to a post-surgery infection, she grew distant from Nick. Meanwhile, Max, overcome with guilt for attempting to sabotage Nick’s research papers, recalculated the material and secretly submitted the corrected formula for grant consideration. Max’s girlfriend, Stephanie, confessed to Nick what Max had done, which made Nick angry as he was sure Max’s calculations would be inaccurate and cause Nick further humiliation in the eyes of the grant board. Surprisingly, Max’s work was correct and Nick received his grant. It was during this time that Stephanie and Nick grew closer.
When the new dean of the physics department at Salem University, Trent Robbins, presented Nick with a check for his alternative fuel research, Nick announced to Dean Robbins that he was giving all the grant money back, since Max deserved the credit. Realizing Nick had developed the majority of the formula, the dean asked Nick to review Max’s work.
Seeing that Max actually knew what he was doing, the two made up. Nick even encouraged him to pursue a career in research. Instead, Max headed to France in search of his half sister. When Nick saw a video blog of Melanie Layton, aka Premier Party Girl, he realized she was Max’s sister. Nick headed to France to find her. Based on her blog, Nick decided to assume the role of a wealthy playboy in order to garner Melanie’s attention. Before returning to Salem, Mel, Nick, Stephanie and Max got in a bit of trouble, resulting in Mel and Nick breaking Stephanie and Max out of jail.
Dean Robbins, who it turns out was Melanie’s father, convinced his Melanie to have a drink with a man whom he owned a large gambling debt. Things got ugly when the man wanted more than a nightcap. Thankfully, Nick rescued Mel from nearly being raped, but he got shot in the process.
Upon their return to Salem, Trent Robbins was murdered and Mel’s new pal, Nick was at the top of the suspect list. Nick began drinking heavily, even receiving a DUI. Maggie found painkillers in Nick’s room and she remember how his mother, Jessica, began acting in the same irrational way when she was addicted to painkillers.
While under the influence of the drugs, Nick began stalking Melanie. He even sends her a note indicating she murdered her father at the cemetery. Jolted by being stalked, Melanie agrees to move into Maggie’s with Nick. While living at Maggie’s, Mel discovered the same stationary in Maggie’s desk that her ‘stalker’ had used.
When she confronted Nick, he confessed, but insisted he did it as a way to protect her, also convincing her she was the one who killed Trent. Nick then convinced Mel to leave Salem. While at a motel near the Salem airport, Nick told Mel they should get married, that way he wouldn’t be called to testify against her. While at the hotel chipping away at ice to make drinks, Nick’s hacking at the ice caused Mel to flashback to the night of Trent’s murder. When she remembered Nick stabbing Trent, Mel and Nick began to fight. Their fight lead them to the balcony, and just as Bo Brady was kicking in the hotel door, Melanie fell over the side of the balcony.
Thankfully, Bo and Philip were able to pull Melanie to safety and Nick was arrested for Trent’s murder.
In an effort to make things right with Melanie, Nick signed over the rights to his alternative fuel project to her. In spite of Maggie and Melanie both testifying on his behalf, Nick was sentenced to two to five years in jail. Just as he was being carted off to jail, Nick asked Max and Chelsea to help Melanie oversee his research.
Fast forward to August 2012 and with the help of his cousins, Hope Brady and Julie Williams, his Great Aunt Maggie Horton and the town’s resident psychiatrist, Dr. Marlena Evans, Nick is about to return to Salem.
During Nick’s absence, Melanie discovered Dr. Jonas is her birthfather, and that Maggie is her grandmother. She dated Nathan Horton, married Philip, divorced him and is currently dating Chad DiMera. Oh, and did I mention she was again recently traumatized by yet another stalker/kidnapper?
With word that Molly Burnett, the actress who plays Melanie, is about to leave “Days of Our Lives”, it will be interesting to see if Nick’s return plays into Melanie’s pending departure in a negative or positive way.
