This week, Joran Van der Sloot’s attorney filed for his case to be reviewed citing that he misled by his attorney during his first trial in Peru. Van der Sloot was convicted of aggravated homicide in the death of Stephany Flores Ramirez in January, and he now claims that his attorney offered him a deal of 15 years in prison. Van der Sloot’s current sentence will end in June, 2038 and he is attempting to cut quite a few years off that sentence with this latest court filing in Peru.
Maximo Altez is Van der Sloot’s current attorney and he has stated that Joran should have been charged with manslaughter, not aggravated homicide in Stephany Flores Ramirez’ murder. The court has agreed to allow the case to be handed over to Peru’s Supreme Court and will be evaluated for its legality.
Thursday, Joran’s attorney said: “If we are allowed to proceed, we will request a revision of the sentence, where Joran will say he was ill-advised by his previous attorney who had promised him 15 years in exchange for a guilty plea,” Altez told Newsweek.
A rumor that Van der Sloot is attempting to get married in prison broke last week and many people are trying to determine if it is true. Joran’s attorney was used as the source of the claims and he denies it all, according to Newsweek.
“I deny all of that. As far as I know, he’s not going to get married. They cited me as the source, but I’m just in charge of his legal issues, and I don’t participate in his private life.”
Joran was also involved in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway who disappeared in Aruba in 2005. Holloway, 18, was last seen with van der Sloot. For more on that story, click here.
Joran van der Sloot’s original lawyer, Luz Marina Romero Chinchay told HLN that van der Sloot lied about several claims during the time she represented him. Romero said that she was hired by van der Sloot during his confession, after he refused a public defender and said he wanted a private attorney. According to Romero, she asked him if he wanted her and he said yes. She asked him about payment and he said his mother would pay. Now van der Sloot denies that he ever hired her.
