As James Homes was arrested after opening fire in the Aurora Colorado movie theater during the midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” he confessed to rigging both his car and his apartment with explosive devices.
The Aurora Police Department found nothing in the car other than the firearms he used during the shooting, but the apartment is rigged with very sophisticated trip wires and two 2-liter bottles filled with some kind of unidentified liquid. A robotic device and camera’s were used to see inside of this apartment and the officials onsite are moving very slowly to prevent loss of both lives of the first responders and the evidence that they believe to be in Holmes apartment.
Five residential buildings that surround the apartment building where Holmes apartment is located at 17th and Paris in Aurora Colorado have been evacuated.
Many boxes of evidence were taken out of the dumpster you see in the photo in the slide show. One of the things found in the dumpsters were several shooting targets.
James Holmes the shooter of 71 victims including 12 dead ranging in ages from 3 months to 45 years of age is in custody at this time.
7News The Denver Channel reports that neighbors living directly below Holmes called the Aurora PD at midnight to report that very loud techno music was coming from the apartment and that no one would answer the door. Chris Rodriguez said his girlfriend knocked loudly on the door to ask them to turn down the music. She listened at the door and thought she saw the door jiggle.
“The door moved a little bit, and the handle jiggled a little, and she was contemplating going into the apartment, but something told her don’t do it,” Rodriguez said.
At that point they called the police again who told them they were in the middle of an emergency and wouldn’t be able to respond. The music stopped at 1 a.m. At 2 a.m. the couple heard a loud crash followed by a knock on the door where the SWAT team told them they needed to evacuate the building. You can read more about that on the website here. They speculate that perhaps Holmes would come up to get him to turn the music down and he was hoping that someone would set off the explosives to distract police from the movie theater.
The names of the victims other than Denver news intern Jessica Ghawi also known as Jessica Redfield are being withheld until all of the families have been contacted.
