Even though only a month has passed since the kids got out of school, now is the time to start preparing for all the things they’ll need for the new year.
First, parents should check their child’s backpack for wear and determine if a new backpack is needed. Then, they should check inside the backpack. There may be unused or reusable supplies.
Many schools have supply lists available online. Parents should compare the supplies they have with those on the list before shopping to make they do not purchase something they do not need.
For clothing, parents should go through their child’s drawers and determine what still fits and what needs to be replaced.
For both supplies and clothing, parents should create a master list available on their smartphone so it is with them even when they just happen to notice a great deal. Those without a smartphone can keep the list in their wallet.
Speaking of smartphones, parents can save money on supplies and clothing thanks to reward apps, like Shopkick. With Shopkick, users earn points walking into partner stores, and then scanning items like a scavenger hunt. The points can then be used to earn gift cards at stores like Target, Old Navy and Macy’s.
Last, parents should decide on a realistic budget. When all the needs on the lists are met and there is still money left is when parents can give in to extra trend items their child claims they need.
