Everywhere you look you see “back to school” information, sales, etc. right now as usual for this time of year. Yet for some people the question is not “where” but “why” should I go back to school. How is the curriculum addressing my real needs?
Bullying and gay suicide where hot topics this past year, and many schools took pains to address these issues. But the real issue underneath is happiness. And this issue is relevant to all human beings. The bullies and the bullied, the gay, straight and everything in between. All human beings want happiness. And you can bet there’d be less bullying and less suicide if each person had the tools for happiness.
Where are the courses on happiness? You’d think if there was something so important to everyone that whole universities would address happiness. Or at least entire departments. Every school should have a department of happiness.
Even those who think that university degree = more pay, are incorrect in thinking that more pay = more happiness, according to recent research by economists in the UK. http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2012/jun/10/neurotics-pay-rise-success
And what about love? Love is another core need of all humanity for all through recorded history. Where are the schools of love? Where is Washington University’s Department of Love? Maybe these topics are addressed in a philosophy course, but something so important to society is left for the self-help isle at the bookstore or your local church or synagogue. It’s an upside down world.
Happiness and Love are topics that many people think they can figure out on their own. Why is there so much divorce and general unhappiness? Because many people can’t figure it out on their own. In fact most people probably can’t.
Its possible to suggest that happiness and love are part of a broader topic of spirituality. The irony of spiritual topics is that while they are crucially important to all people, they are studied only by the minority.
Apple and Dell offer back to school deals on electronics. Walmart and Costco offer deals on clothes. Target for odds and ends.http://www.target.com/c/back-to-college/-/N-5q0g0
And when you’re done with your research on back to school trends in computers and fashion, don’t forget to prepare yourself spiritually to go back to school. What do you really want out of your education? How is it addressing your core needs?
The illusion of our society is that school is taking care of your intellectual and career needs. It isn’t. Because more than a job and education, love and happiness are your real needs.
Make sure you have a plan how to acquire those too.
