If you have ever had a salad in a taco shell bowl you know how delicious it is. Unfortunately it is also fattening. To cut down on calories and fat, you can bake a tortilla to use as a crunchy taco shell bowl.
A 10″ tortilla makes a nice size bowl for a single serving, but you can use smaller tortillas to make cute little serving dishes. The method is the same for both recipes.
While you can use tortillas from any grocery store, one of my favorite places to get fresh tortillas is Pro’s Ranch Market in Mesa. They are fabulous and so fresh, they are often hot when you buy them.
Taco Shell Bowls
Makes 4 bowls
- Four 10” Flour taco tortillas
- Cooking spray
Preheat oven to 450°.
- Lightly crunch 4 pieces of aluminum foil to become shapes for taco bowls. Look at the photo in the slideshow to see how the foil should look. Spray foil with cooking spray and place tortilla on top of the foil. You may need to form the tortilla over the foil so that they become a bowl.
- Bake for about 6 to 8 minutes until they are lightly browned. Watch closely so that the shells do not burn. Carefully remove the foil from each shell and turn the bowl over. Bake for another 2 minutes or until the shell is lightly browned. Handle these carefully or they will break
- These bowls go great with some of our favorite Mexican-style salads. Watch for our chicken fajita salad and cilantro lime ranch dressing recipes.
