You know you’ve hit the big time when your newest album sells over two million copies in one week. Yes, one week. No one today has been able to break the record set by one of the 90s most successful boy bands, *Nsync (also known as ‘N Sync).
For those of you with daughters, I’m sure you recognize that name as your daughters would constantly get into fights over who’s better: *Nsync or Backstreet boys? Justin Timberlake or Nick Carter? Pop songs or ballads? And let’s be honest, there were those that were closet fans that teased you about liking either of them, who secretly were in the same debate.
No Strings Attached, released in 2000, was the second album to be released by *Nsync. The title is a play on the idea of gaining indepenence from corporate control as well as being a slap in the face to their ex-management Trans Continental and Lou Pearlman for keeping their hard earned money from them and for other problems that arose in a famously known law suit. Before the release of their sophomore album, they left Trans Continental and signed onto world renowned Jive Records.
*Nsync is made up of Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, Lance Bass, and Christ Kirkpatrick. With their quick rise to fame, first starting in Europe as at the time of thier start pop music wasn’t the “cool” thing to listen too, fans quickly took notice of how true their boy band name was. It was actually Timberlake’s mother, Lynn, who came up with the name as she took the last letter of all their names (JustiN, ChriS, JoeY, LansteN, and JC) and put them together to form the name as they were “in sync with their harmonies and their dance steps.”
This album was a hit with the mix of genres raging from their usual pop sound (with their hit song “(Dirty) Pop”; a song all about how it wasn’t “cool” to listen to pop music but you secretly liked it)to R&B with Justin Timberlake’s lead song “Gone”. And they pulled it off well. Th album’s lead single “Bye Bye Bye” still has fans to this day doing the trademark fist pump as they sing “You may hate me, but it aint no lie, baby, Bye, Bye, Bye“. It was also the song, “It’s Gonna Be Me” that fans to this day instantly think of when they hear the name *Nsync. By selling more than two million copies in its debut week, the album set a one-week sales record in the United States that is still held by the band today.
Why was *Nsync more popular than Backstreet Boys to millions of fans worldwide? While the boys of *Nsync were showing off their flashy dance moves as they sang with head-mics, the Backstreet Boys were famous for their ballads, although to be fair, they did have their fair share of up beat songs I still dance along to today.
And no girl could deny that the boys are very good looking. Even with Justin Timberlake shaving off his trademark curls, he can pull off the buzz cut look (or even his bandana phase) without any problems. Plus, who doesn’t like it when boy bands are dressed the same. As with other boy bands at the time, they were stuck in matching camouflage and basketball jerseys.
And their acapella is impeccable. With Lance filling in the bass (which is ironic considering his last name is spelled like Bass; it’s pronounced like the fish though), stacking their vocals on top of each other until they hit the top with Chris as a counter tenor. As they showcase this in their shows with the sweet stylings of “I Thought She Knew” and “Sailing” do you really understand why they’re named the way they are.
The next time someone decides to play one of the hit songs from this iconic band, don’t just shake your head, embrace your inner 90s kid and jam along with everyone else. Which son was your favorite? “Bye Bye Bye”? “Dirty Pop”? “It’s Gonna Be Me”?
Nsync’s “No Strings Attached” has the perfect blend of songs that make you dance in your room (and in your car) as well as sing along at the top of your lungs as well as give you songs to sing to your significant other and to show how much they mean to you. ;) I give this album a 5/5.
