After scoring seven unanswered runs in a big comeback win the previous night, the Blaze offense was virtually non-existent against Andrew Chafin and the Visalia Rawhide. As a result, Bakersfield went down in flames, and lost convincingly to the Rawhide on Wednesday night in Bakersfield, by a 7-1 final score. The loss ends a Blaze short two game winning streak.
The only thing that kept the Blaze from being shut-out was a pair of back-to-back doubles from Niko Vasquez and Dominic D’Anna in the 4th inning to score their only run of the night. The game was tied 1-1 after four innings of play. Other than that, the club managed just three more hits to go with two walks on a difficult night at the plate.
After that tie, the game belonged to Visalia, as they scored once again in the 5th to go up 2-1. But it all started to come apart in the 6th, as Visalia collected four singles and two walks, scored three times to go up 5-1, and in the 7th, the Rawhide added two more on three more hits, to go by the 7-1 final score.
Tim Crabbe (L, 4-2) took the loss for the Blaze, and despite allowing a handful of base runners over the first three innings, allowed only one runner to score in the second, before giving up the second run in the 5th, his final inning on the mound.
Visalia starter Andrew Chafin (W, 6-6) started slow and worked around a 1st inning bases-loaded jam, but led 1-0 after three innings, allowed the only run in the 4th, then settled down afterward, as he retired the final 11 Blaze batters he faced, while striking out eight and walking just two, both in that 1st inning.
For the first time in the past three games, the Blaze pen could not keep the game in check. The runs scored off Kyle McMyne and Brooks Pinckard were the first allowed by them in nearly 11 innings of relief.
The two clubs will finish the three game series on Thursday, with Jamie Walczak of the Blaze going up against Willy Paredes of the Rawhide.
