This is technically a collection of zombie horror short stories. It is not great though…
The collection comprises unrelated zombie themed stories of Veronica Mordem, an urban fantasy writer of moderate indie publishing fame. Some of the stories seemed interesting (two were even pretty good) but overall they seem childish and poorly constructed. Here’s what I mean:
The book opens with two young girls running on foot from zombies. They are rescued by a lesbian truck driver who will only help them if they make out with her… Ok… Let’s try the next one.
A boy really likes a girl. She doesn’t like him. When she becomes a zombie he takes her back to his place–and…. he gets eaten…
A guy is stuck in a barn with a pregnant woman. After almost dying of thirst he decides to eat her, but her baby zombie eats him…
Each story is sexual enough that you think it will be smut but then it just fizzles out and they get eaten. It also seems like each story is written by someone completely different because the voice changes so dramatically. This collection would have been much better with a little more direction.
This is a common problem for many indie authors. They are good story tellers but need an editor, test reader, or a forum to give it another look. Simple mistakes and rough sections could have easily been smoothed out with a little more “post-production” work.
Overall a handful of stories are enjoyable. One was about a naval medic in space who teams up with an all-girls sports team to fight zombies. Another had to do with a voodoo ritual that was very well told (though it left one wondering “is that it?”). Veronica Mordem is a promising writer but needs more direction.
It will be interesting to see what she does next.
As a side note the cover by Milos Ckonjovic is fairly fantastic. It is eye catching and well-constructed. Unlike many independently published book covers this one looks professional.
Overall I am awarding two dancing hamsters to Bizarre Zombie Stories. One for a couple of good reads and one for a dandy of a cover.
