President Obama had no choice last week but to cut his Florida campaign trip short because of the massacre in Colorado. The President, like his opponent, Mitt Romney chose not to be bold and make a declarative statement about the lunacy of gun laws in the United States. Make one comment about this, and you will be condemned about making an assault on liberty and freedom. The extreme right has hijacked common sense, and Americans should be ashamed. We are the laughing stock of the civilized world, and I use the word “civilized” loosely. As with producing and driving mega-huge SUVs too long, and constructing and buying “McMansions” when we not only couldn’t afford them, but couldn’t afford to heat and cool them. Why are we always the last ones to “get it”? There’s nothing wrong with legalized use and ownership of firearms, there’s lunacy in overdoing it. Most Americans agree that making assault weapons available is insane. Will we have the courage to do something about this? In a word, no.
This campaign should be about the rampant availability of guns and ammunition, but it won’t be. Mitt Romney who had an assault weapons ban (of sorts) in effect while governor of Massachusetts, gave way to the extreme right which hijacked his party. John McCain did the same in 2008. It’s a pity to watch once reasonable politicians sell their integrity for an opportunity to elective office. There are no profiles in courage in today’s America. I like President Obama, and understand he doesn’t have the votes in Congress for meaningful legislation. Maybe we do have enough laws on the books in regards to firearms, but that’s not so in regards to assault weapons. To let that ban lapse is a joke. It shows just how backwards we are as a nation. We have reaped what we have sewn. Massacres like Aurora will occur again. We will go through this charade again. America has lost its will to common sense and logic. The meek (minded) have inherited the earth, and America.
James Holmes is a loser who found the only way to reject his lost life is to get back at the society he thinks caused his alienation. Too many violent movies; too many violent video-games; too little love and affection at home. Whatever the sick recipe of mental collapse came together to create such a sick-minded loser is almost meaningless because there are hundreds more like this dimwit. He simply feels like an outcast, and is angry at society. Violence is the one thing he feels comfortable with, and our system allows such a deviant to easily attain the firearms he needs to act on his revenge. This campaign of 2012 should be about jobs, f course. This campaign should also be about what hurts this country and what ideas can honestly make America a more sensible culture. Most anyone can easily see that wholesale slaughter is about personal responsibility, but that includes a sane an responsible place where buying weapons that can mow down countless human beings within a minute or two is, in itself insane. It’s amazing we’re even having this conversation in 2012. We are letting the extremists win. We will all lose for this insipid mistake in judgement. We can and should do better than this as a people.
