A grand opportunity to be a part of a great change was presented to the families of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. The Education system in Charlotte North Carolina is in need of an over haul and which many believe are about to come to pass with its new superintendent. The belief is that with this new leadership those that have the focus of our children being the future, will come out seeing that their work has not been in vain.
My heart was encouraged as we the “Mecklenburg PTA Council” met with Dr. Heath Morrison at Ridge Road Middle School for an intimate session. He wanted to know what our concerns were and what we believed the solutions could be. I love his word choice and can not wait for another chance to engage him. During the meeting I jotted down things that grabbed my attention and here is one: instead of saying ‘Mandatory Meeting’ he says ‘Required Opportunity’. This was enough for me to recognize he is prepared to ignite a positive mental thought process throughout the schools in the coming years. His goal is that EVERY child will graduate college and/or career ready.
One thing he is focusing on is a core value being ‘Parent Engagement/Involvement’. He says, “Instead of looking at the schools as a business, try looking at them as a medical office. The goal is for every person to leave healthy, but some need more treatment than others”. This is a challenge to the thinking of the parents who fear their child will not get enough resources at their school in comparison to another school. We have to ask do our children really NEED more of do we just WANT more? I am interested to see where this path will lead. My hopes are for a better tomorrow for every child in the schools. I am even hopeful that enrollment will increase and that there will even be wait lists, where parents are trying to bring their children back to CMS.
