Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson has been fired from his job with the Miami Dolphins because he was charged with domestic violence. Johnson was released from jail on $2,500 bond Sunday after his wife, Evelyn Lozada of Basketball Wives fame, accused him of head-butting her during an argument in front of their home. Johnson was charged with simple domestic battery, a misdemeanor. A non-contact order was issued in the case. The 34-year-old Johnson had been trying to win a job with the Dolphins after a disappointing season with the New England Patriots in 2011.
This brings up a subject that is so pervasive in our society domestic violence. The bible actually does say something about domestic violence. In Malachi 2:16 the bible talks about covering one’s wife with violence and dealing treacherously with your spouse. Domestic violence is to say a rough topic for pastors to deal with. I do not want to get into the back and forth of the he said she said in the Chad and Evelyn Johnson case because those are the details that divide us all. However, from a biblical standpoint, we know that God does not like or condone domestic violence. The other fact is that domestic violence is not a grounds for divorce. That is not me, that is the bible. There is only one ground for divorce according to Jesus and that is fornication.
Most people, actually do not need a divorce, they need an exorcism. The problem once again is not in the details of who did what to who, the problem is in the root cause of domestic violence. In fact, in almost every type of violence is the demons of power and control that cause the escalation of the problem. In domestic violence those are usually joined with the demons of fear, jealousy, covetousness and envy, all are sin in the sight of God. Most people that get married do not realize that they are in the most trying trial that God can place you in because you have vowed, committed, and made a covenant not only with your spouse but with God as well. It is a covenant and it is a three fold cord.
We always hear people say to leave the batterer. However, there is one problem with that, you leave a broken, controlling, angry, hurt person unhealed to move on to someone else who will ruin more lives. Getting rid of the person does not get rid of the demons. We know that it is spiritual because domestic violence will manifest from generation to generation as a generational curse. We see people that are battered attracted to batterers. This is not a problem that can be solved by human wisdom.
Demons or evil spirits are at the root of any disturbance inside of marriage and the only way to deal with spirits is with spiritual warfare. When a couple is not equipped spiritually it is very easy for the devil to drive a wedge between them. The bible is clear that we do not war against flesh and blood, but against spiritual wickedness. Anytime we allow a spirit other than the spirit of God to control our thoughts we can end up in a bad situation including domestic violence. It is not by power or by might but by the spirit of God that we actually gain control in any situation. That is not an easy concept for humans to understand because we are always looking to place blame or to punish someone for what they have done. Is that really God’s way? Traditional counseling does not work because the element of spiritual warfare and spiritual development is usually left out. A person cannot be healed without repentance and a willingness to change their behavior.
The news reports said that Johnson’s wife found a receipt for condoms in the back of the car and that started the fight and in the ensuing fight he head butted her. So now lets look at the details and see how the word of God could have handled this situation spiritually. First the bible says be slow to anger. It also says be angry but sin not. The bible says that the wife can change the husband with a meek chaste spirit. The bible tells the husband to deal with the wife as the weaker vessel and to dwell with the wife according to knowledge. The bible says the spouse can depart for a while and then return but not divorce. Finally, the bible says to live in peace, pray for people and forgive each other . Those are just a few things that the word of God says and we have not even mentioned the sound doctrine of love. If you don’t know them, then you fall victim to the lies of the enemy. My people perish for a lack of knowledge.
The devil has a job to do and his job is to tear marriages and families apart and to keep people outside the will and purposes of God. People that end up in domestic violence have put their control issues, fears and jealousy in front of God. Fear is nothing but negative faith. They are trying to be in control but not realizing that God is in control. Once a person is surrendered to the spirit of God then that is when control actually becomes a reality. As people we have to stop counseling people to throw people away but we have to realize that Jesus has called us all to the lost. Sometimes, in fact, many times those that are lost sleep in the bed right next to you. My prayers are with Chad and Evelyn. With men it is impossible, but not with God, with God all things are possible.
