A 4-year-old girl was shot while traveling in the back seat of a van on a Clayton County highway Wednesday.
So far, police have not said how the child was shot, but said charges are possible in the shooting.
The incident happened about 11:15 a.m. near Towngate Boulevard in Jonesboro, Clayton County police Lt. Chris Windley said.
“The child’s mother stated she was traveling westbound on Highway 54 towards Towngate Boulevard when she heard a ‘pop,’” Lt. Windley said.
The woman looked into the back and noticed her 4-year-old daughter was slumped over in the car seat, Lt. Windley said.
The girl had a gunshot wound to the head, according to media reports.
The mother called 911 and rendered aid to her daughter until paramedics arrived on scene, the lieutenant said.
The child was flown to Children’s Hospital of Atlanta at Egleston.
“Through detectives’ initial investigation, it appeared that the gunshot came from within the vehicle,” Lt. Windley said. “The weapon was confiscated and the vehicle was impounded for further investigation.”
The child’s condition was not known Thursday.
Police have not provided any details on whether anyone else was in the vehicle or who owns the gun. The shooting remains under investigation, Lt. Windley said.
