Charter schools have become a highly popular option for parents who are dissatisfied with the public schools in their community. Private schools are often too expensive as a choice for parents who do not want to send their children to a public school. Charter schools have been established by a variety of people around the country. Some have been established by business professionals. Some have been established by professional organizations in the community. Charter schools are unique in that they are actually public schools that can operate under their own governance without the red tape that burdens our public school teachers and administrators. The important concept behind charter schools is that the teachers are empowered to do their jobs. Charter schools have the “feel” of private schools without the high cost. They are free to everyone.
The Imagine School is an organization with 74 public charter schools in 12 states and the District of Columbia. They serve approximately 35,000 students around the country. Sarasota is proud to have The Imagine School at Palmer Ranch as a quality option for parents who are dissatisfied with their public school system.
The Imagine School has a quality curriculum for its youngest students beginning with pre-school and pre-kindergarten. Creative Curriculum is a nationally recognized curriculum for young children. This curriculum balances teacher-directed learning activties with child-initiated learning projects. The curriculum has a strong literacy component. Talking, singing, and using words in a variety of ways gives children the opportunity to grow their language skills. Children read aloud, and develop their listening skills by hearing the teacher read aloud. Story-telling gives young children to develop creativity. Writing is also introduced with developmentally appropriate activities. The math component is of special interest in that students learn math concepts by participating in meaningful learning projects and play activities in which they can actually use math skills. Children learn best when a skill means something to them in their everyday life. The Creative Curriculum recognizes that meaningful play is important for young children to learn.
An important component of the early childhood program at The Imagine School is the ongoing assessment that is part of Creative Curriculum. Teachers are not “teaching to the test” when guiding their students in learning activities. Assessment is divided into 5 components. Constructive play, social competence, and physical/emotional development are assessed. The Imagine School believes that the curriculum and assessment should be related.
