I think that everyone has an image in their heads of what makes a great date. In a great many cases, I am willing to bet that it involves table cloths, low light, and romantic music. Growing up, many of us were groomed to that ideal. Movies, TV, our parents, all told us to model our great dates after this formula. Fortunately, times have changed and dating has too. Let’s examine some attributes that can make for a great date.
The Great Outdoors
What could be better than spending time in the sun with your favorite person? While going to the beach and going to a park might be a hoot, how about dining in the great outdoors. Aside from a picnic, you could choose to dine at a great café or restaurant with al fresco dining available. I know, H-town’s summers are brutal, but some folk are made for the heat. We also do have fall and spring. And, honestly, our winters aren’t half bad. So, you see, Houston is made for outdoor dining, right?
Nothing kills the mood like the same ole thing. Now, this also assumes that you are both open minded, in terms of cuisine. If your significant other really doesn’t like Asian food, taking them to a Korean restaurant isn’t going to work. BUT if your beloved is into adventure, finding a new, highly recommended restaurant serving a cuisine you are not familiar with can be a perfect evening. If you’re familiar with the cuisine, it’s even more fun to see someone else discover it. Novel experiences also make for great memory creators. Even if it turns out that Ethiopian food isn’t for you or the restaurant isn’t as good as the reviews led you to believe, you can still enjoy the memories.
Just like the same ole food can kill a mood, the same ole place can do it too. Stepping outside the ordinary makes your date a learning experience. Even if you have been there several times, taking a date who has never dined there can open your eyes to the restaurant in ways that are unexpected. They may choose something completely outside your normal selections and you may find it’s just the thing you love. If you are both new to the venue, you can explore and make complimentary selections to help you best sample the menu. Again, novel experiences will make exceptional memories.
Romantic, high energy, casual, mellow, exotic, you name it. Find a place that sets the proper mood for you and your honey and the mood you want to convey. Do you want to let her know that you are laid back guy who enjoys the local scene? Pick a great gastro-pub with great local music. If you want to let him know you are a high class sophisticate, select a sleek, stylish location serving haute cuisine. The atmosphere of the location can tell your date a lot about you and what you value. The key here is where ever you choose, you need to be certain that you are comfortable there. You may already be nervous about your date. If you’re nervous about the venue, you will definitely come across as being un-smooth, and no one wants to do that.
