For Long Island Disney fans who can’t make it to Walt Disney World or to London for the 2012 Summer Olympics, why not bring Disney and the Olympics to you? You can create your own Disney Olympics with your kids all in your own backyard.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve never played a sport before. If you’re a Disney fan, you can let your imagination run wild to come up with the events of your Disney Olympics. First, you’ll want to gather your family together to help you brainstorm. Think about all the things the Disney characters do in their movies. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
Pocahontas’s Sprint: Set up a start line and finish line in your backyard or at the park if you need more room.
Ariel’s Water Events: If you have a pool in your backyard, or go to your town’s local public pool, you can add any water events you want. See who can swim the fastest from one side of the pool to the other. Play water polo, get a net and play volleyball in the pool, or just have fun with it and have a cannon ball contest.
Merida’s Archery: Real arrows are not recommended, but through the Disney Store you can get archery kits that have suction cups on the end of the arrows instead of sharp points.
Once you have your traditional events set up, allow your family’s creativity to really shine. Create your own Disney Olympic events based on the movies. Here are some ideas.
Rescue the Princess: Either have someone volunteer to be the princess or use a doll instead. Set up an obstacle course in your yard that participants have to go through to get to the princess. Consider the age groups you are dealing with when creating your course. You can even have someone play the villain to battle each person. Foam swords can be purchased at most toy stores.
Snow Whites Pie Eating Event: You can choose a different princess or different foods, but allow your kids to get messy with a food eating contests. They can’t use their hands and have to finish everything on their plate. Have towels ready for clean up.
Cinderella’s Shoe Relay: This is a team event that has been done at camp events, but why not add it to your Olympics? Members of all teams take off their shoes and throw them into big pile. The shoes get mixed up so the pairs are separated. Teams line up on the opposite side of the yard or field. When the event starts, the first person of each team runs towards the pile, looks for their shoes, has to put them on (including lacing them up), and runs back to their team. The next person goes and so on. The team with all their shoes on first wins.
The possibilities are endless. It’s a great summer activity to do with your family on a weekend, at a picnic or BBQ, or at a block party. You can even get different colored paper with some ribbon and create your own medals and awards ceremony. It’s sure to be a hit with other Disney fans.
