There is no doubt that CTV expected Jennifer Abel of Laval, Quebec and Emilie Heymans of Montreal to medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London in the women’s 3m synchronized springboard diving competition.
Immediately after their victory, CTV went to a Visa commercial narrated by actor Morgan Freeman congratulating Heymans on making history.
In winning an Olympic Bronze medal Sunday, Heymans became the first Canadian to win a medal at four straight Olympic Games and the first diver to win a medal at four straight Olympic Games.
It was Canada’s medal of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
In interviewing Canadian Chef de Mission Mark Tewksbury before the Olympic Games were to begin, he stated the importance of a darkhorse to give the Canadian momentum, an athlete that wasn’t on anybody’s radar to come through with a medal performance. By having a commercial in place and ready to go immediately following the competition took place, it was clear Heymans and Abel were expected to medal.
Karen Cockburn will try to follow in Heyman’s footsteps by winning a medal at four straight Olympic Games as she competes in the women’s trampoline (August 4, CTV, 7:00 a.m.)
