EPG health Media announced the launch of a new interactive online ‘Knowledge Centre’ on Neuropathic Pain for healthcare professionals involved in the management of patients with neuropathic pain (www.epgonline.org/neuropathic-pain).
Sponsored by Astellas Pharma Europe Ltd., the Neuropathic Pain Knowledge Centre includes a comprehensive review of diagnostic and assessment approaches to neuropathic pain and well as the wide range of management and treatment options currently available.
Neuropathy is actually a “a collection of disorders that occurs when nerves of the peripheral nervous system (the part of the nervous system outside of the brain and spinal cord) are damaged. The condition is generally referred to as peripheral neuropathy, and it is most commonly due to damage to nerve axons.
Neuropathy usually causes pain and numbness in the hands and feet. It can result from traumatic injuries, infections, metabolic disorders, and exposure to toxins. It is often experienced by patients with diabetes, multiple sclerosis, cancer herpes zoster infection, HIV, nutritional deficiencies, toxins, genetic or immune system disorders and spinal cord injury.
While there are several classes of medication such as “antidepressants”, “anticonvulsants” and “opioids” that may be used individually or in combination to treat neuropathic pain, complexities of the condition and a lack of best practice guidelines mean that neuropathic pain can be very difficult to treat, and most patients only find partial relief.
“Determining the best treatment approach for individual patients with neuropathic pain remains a huge challenge for healthcare professionals.” said Chris Cooper, EPG Health Media. “By working with our partner Astellas, we aim to provide doctors using epgonline.org with a resource that supports them in making the important decisions that can improve the outcome for their patients.”
“The Neuropathic Pain Knowledge Centre is a clear example of our commitment to provide educational support to health professionals and patients in this area.” adds Mario Monella, Medical Affairs Specialist, Astellas Pharma Europe Ltd. “These resources will support greater understanding, diagnosis and treatment which will address the evolving needs of patients.”
