DNC boss Debbie Wasserman Schultz told voters in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, that Mitt Romney will force seniors out of nursing homes and “into the cold,” Fosters.com reported Sunday.
Wasserman Schultz, the Florida Democrat who owns a home in New Hampshire, told the crowd of roughly 100 people that Romney “and his Tea Party extremist allies” want to “rip that safety net out from under our seniors, and we are not going to allow that to happen.”
According to the DNC boss, if Romney is elected, Medicare will be replaced with a voucher program she said would “end Medicare as we know it.” According to Wasserman Schultz, the change would cost the average senior an extra $6,300 in annual Medicare premiums.
She also told the group that Republicans are working to convert Medicaid into a block grant program, meaning that seniors who rely on Medicaid benefits to pay for nursing home care will no longer be able to afford their bills.
But if enacted, the voucher program in the House GOP plan will not take effect until about 2022, and the budget resolution says it will not affect current Medicare recipients. The block grants would begin in 2013.
After the event, Foster’s requested information from Wasserman Schultz’s regional press secretary regarding how Obama intends to reform the Medicare program, which faces a massive structural deficit. None was provided.
“President Obama and his friends in the Democratic party think the solution for seniors is placing a panel of 15 unelected and unaccountable Washington bureaucrats in between them and their doctors,” RNC Spokesman Tommy Schultz told Foster’s in a written statement.
“Instead of keeping his promise to protect and preserve Medicare, President Obama decided to cut over $500 billion from Medicare to help pay for his government takeover of healthcare. Mitt Romney wants to deliver affordable, patient-centered solutions for our healthcare, not more bureaucracy and red tape.”
