Jennifer Jordon of the Providence Journal reported recently that Rhode Island Education Commissioner Deborah Gist has a brain tumor that her physicians believe is benign. She will be having surgery to remove the tumor in late September.
Of course Ms. Gist is the past D.C. State Superintendent who served in this position for a couple of years when it was first created by Mayor Fenty. She is a friend who makes a positive impression on everyone who meets her.
Ms. Gist had an unusual accident in July during a plane flight to Atlanta. When she was trying to put her bag in an overhead bin she fell backwards hitting her head. She was diagnosed with a concussion and afterwards complained of headaches, being tired, and nauseous. Tests then revealed the brain tumor Ms. Jordon says is “the size of a lima bean.”
Of course, we wish Ms. Gist the best and hope she returns to her job soon.
