Gospel artists Deitrick and Damita Haddon have divorced. Born and raised in Detroit, the now ex-Haddons were the poster children for young love. Their marriage dissolved over a year ago, but it was news to their fans when Mr. Haddon announced their 15 year union was officially over on August 14 via Facebook and Twitter.
“Many call me a man of God. I say I’m a good man trying to serve a great God the best i can. If i was that powerful of a Man Of God i would still be married 2 Damita[sic],” seeming to accept sole responsibility for the breakup, D Haddy’s post read.
He briefly opened up, giving a cryptic clue that his career and ministry demands may have interfered with their home life:
“I’m learning to have balance because you can win & lose @ the same time! It’s possible to work so hard & be so driven that u lose everything! I pray that in the future i find the balance of ministry & family!” [sic]
This admission suggests his individual undertakings may have overshadowed not only their quality time, but also the professional work they did as a couple.
In the beginning, the Haddon’s were a package. Long-time friends before they were married, the couple spread the urban gospel sound and Hip Hop swagger together throughout the nation and world. They were both signed to Tyscot Records as solo acts, but frequently collaborated. Damita moved to Florida with her then husband when he became the Praise and Worship leader at Pastor Paula White’s Without Walls Church. In 2009, they co-hosted the show 85 South Gospel Street on The Word Network.
Former background singer for Aretha Franklin and member of Adoration and Praise, Damita Haddon was also a member of Mr. Haddon’s group, The Voices of Unity before she went solo. She later lent her voice and composing talent to her ex-husband for the award winning album, “Lost and Found.”
Despite this somber news, Haddon said they are both moving on personally and professionally.
“Damita’s doing well & I’m doing fine! Her new cd is amazing. We both are staying true to the call on our lives. Unfortunately not 2gether anymore. I don’t believe in sharing my personal but i think it’s important 4 people to know that in your pursuit of ministry don’t lose family! Don’t be alarmed we’re doing fine. This is very old news for Damita & i but brand new news 2 you. We’re private people! We have moved on! Last i will speak on my personal: Our breakup is NOT recent! It’s been well over a year process. We have both repented & moved on! Damita & i have worked hard in ministry.”
The specific reason they parted, was never given, but Mr. Haddon concluded saying he won’t be opening up on this matter unless it is divinely ordered.
“OK…I’m very private about my personal life..You probably won’t get me 2 ever speak on this again unless God make me share.”
Like Hip Hop’s Bey and Jay they were a winning combination, but in all those years the couple never had children.
