The 2012 Denver Pet Expo, a free indoor event, will take place Saturday, Aug. 11 at the Merchandise Mart. It is one of 25 such events around the country. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The expo will feature local and nationally recognized veterinarians, groomers, trainers, retailers and organizations primarily geared towards pet lovers.
Shorty Rossi, star of “Pit Boss” on the Animal Planet television channel, will make an appearance with his canine sidekick, Hercules. Rossi works with Shorty’s Pit Bull Rescue, a charity he formed that rescues, rehabilitates and places neglected and abused pit bulls in homes.
Celebrity pet expert Harrison Forbes will appear to answer pet questions. Forbes is a dog trainer, animal behaviorist and best-selling author who appears as the resident pet expert on “Live with Regis and Kelly,” and on the Fox News Network, CNN, CBS’ “The Early Show,” and “The Today Show” on NBC.
A highlight of the day will be a mega-adoption event hosted by Banfield Pet Hospitals. More than 200 pets will be available for adoption, along with information from local rescue groups and shelters.
Guardians can sign their pets up in several competitions, such as the costume contest, talent contest or pet/owner musical chairs.
Pets are welcome to attend the event, provided they are on a fixed lead and have proof of age-appropriate current vaccinations. There will be discounted vaccinations and low-cost microchipping available at the expo.

Paint your pet – Water 2 Wine in the Denver Tech Center will host a “Paint Your Pet” event on Aug. 2 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. to help support the Dumb Friends League. Bring a photo of your pet to paint with guidance from Bottle & Bottega artists.

Bark n’ Splash – Dogs can cool off at the City of Lakewood’s 9th annual Bark-n-Splash Bash. Canines can jump in the water in outside pools on the last day they will be open for the season .The schedule:
Glennon Heights – Sun., Aug. 19, 11 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Morse Park, Saturday, Aug. 25 – 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Carmody Outdoor Pool – Saturday, September 8 –11 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Fees: $5 pre-registration, $10 at the gate, register for all three dates and only pay for two.
