This fall, Disney Cruise Line (DCL) will feature Pixar for four seven-night California Coastal sailings aboard the Disney Wonder.
These special sailings will offer DCL guests the opportunity to immerse themselves in Pixar, as well as Disney, magic. The cruises will provide encounters with Pixar characters, movie screenings, and special exhibits and presentations.
John Lasseter, Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, recently talked about the cruises. DCL guests can immerse themselves in colorful world of Pixar with several special offerings, including the following.
Pixar presentations and sneak peeks: Artists and filmmakers from Pixar Animation Studios will offer a look at what goes into making an animated feature film or short. Guests will be able to see a behind-the-scenes look at this summer’s “Brave” as well as a peek at some footage from future Pixar movies.
The Art of Pixar exhibit: This traveling exhibition, with materials seldom seen outside Pixar Animation Studios, will include storyboards, character sketches, environment paintings, maquettes and other concept art.
Pixar films: Pixar throws its vault wide open, screening its collection of Pixar films on the Disney Wonder, including a selection of its animated shorts. Screenings will be offered in several places: Buena Vista Theatre, Walt Disney Theatre, the jumbo LED screen on deck, and even through stateroom TVs. The DCL cruises will also enjoy the theatrical premiere of “Finding Nemo 3D.”
Pixar characters: DCL guests can enjoy meet-and-greets throughout a cruise, featuring more than a dozen Pixar characters. Character encounters include special Pixar-themed dance parties in the Disney Wonder’s Atrium Lobby. Expect to see such popular characters as Mr. Incredible, Remy, Woody, Jessie, and Buzz Lightyear.
Pixar merchandise: “Brave” commemorative lithograph: DCL guests will receive a commemorative lithograph created by Pixar artist and “Brave” co-director/screenwriter, Steve Purcell. Exclusive Pixar merchandise will also be for sale on the cruises.
John Lasseter himself will be aboard one of the cruises, although which sailing will be a surprise to guests.
Update, Aug. 30: Disney Parks Blog did reveal the Pixar guests who will be sailing for each DCL cruise. John Lasseter will be aboard the Sept. 16 sailing. See the full schedule of Pixar presenters.
Among the special plans is a Pixar-themed excursion that has been discussed on the Dis Unplugged’s interview with Jim Urry, VP of Entertainment and Port Adventures with Disney Cruise Line. (The interview goes into some detail about the Pixar cruises and may contain “spoiler-ish” details for certain listeners.)
For these Pixar-inspired cruises, the Disney Wonder will sail out of Los Angeles and visit San Francisco, San Diego and Ensenada, Mexico. The four DCL cruises take place Sept. 16 through Oct. 14, 2012. Rates for the seven-night voyages start at $799 per person for a deluxe inside stateroom, based on double occupancy.
