September 7, 2012 is the first day of school for School District of Philadelphia students in grades 1 through 12. In order to ensure a smooth start to the school year, the district has put several supports in place designed to assist families with vital back to school preparations.
Children must be officially registered to attend any school in the School District of Philadelphia. As stated at http://www.philasd.org/parents/registration.html, if a family falls within the following four categories, the family must register:
- The family has moved to another neighborhood during the summer
- The family is new to Philadelphia
- The family is transferring into the public school system after attending school in either the charter, parochial, or private school systems
- A family that has a student that was not pre-registered for kindergarten in the spring
Schools are open in August to accommodate registration for the 2012-2013 school year. There will be special registration held for new immigrant students. The School District of Philadelphia will hold this registration from August 1st through the 31st, Monday through Friday, 8:30am-6:00pm at the district offices, located at 440 N. Broad Street. All schools in the School District of Philadelphia have a uniform policy. It is imperative that families are aware of their school’s uniform policy prior to school opening, as students are required to follow the uniform mandates set out by the school they attend. The following link provides the uniform policies for all public schools. http://webgui.phila.k12.pa.us/offices/p/publicengagement/policies–procedures/uniform-policy3/
Transportation to and from school can also be arranged by families prior to the first day of school. School bus and free student transpass eligibility are determined by the Office of Transportation Services. The guidelines for free transportation support can be found here:
On August 3, 2012, the District will hold their annual Back to School Extravaganza at South Philadelphia High School between the hours of 8am and 5pm. This event will feature all types of giveaways, workshops and information tables designed to support the student’s transition from summer vacation to back to school.
Here’s to a fantastic first day of school.
