There are hundreds of dog and cat registries throughout the world and several dog registries in the Milwaukee area. These organizations record breeder and breeding information. They range from purebred to mixed and exotic lines. They do not investigate where the animals are bred, under what conditions they are bred nor do they do breeder background checks.
Pet Watch New Jersey lists registries and warns potential purebred owners of the meaning of breeders advertising papered dogs and cats. They note that the breeder paid a registration fee and the sire and dam are purebred.
These registries can have a listing of more than one hundred breeds but these organizations do not investigate the registration only record it. The breeders can be conscientious or pet mills.
Dog in Format gives a substantial listing of dog registries in Wisconsin. Greater Racine Kennel Club and Waukesha Kennel Club are listings in the Milwaukee area.
As with dog registries, registering a cat breed records the breeding information only. Each registry sets its own standard. Cat Breeds Junction has an extensive listing of world cat breeds.
Future articles will list the cat breed standard set down by the American Cat Fanciers’ Association. The dog breed standards will be that of the American Kennel Club.
