Cedartown police and EMS were dispatched to the area of South Estes Street at Jefferson Street Sunday evening just after 9 p.m. when Polk County 911 received a report that a child was struck by a vehicle.
Witnesses on the scene stated that two vehicles were racing up and down the street when the child was struck. The vehicles involved left the scene, however; a full description of the vehicle and driver that struck the child was given to police on the scene.
The child, 8-year-old Elijah Diamond was riding his bicycle in the area when he was struck by a grey Chevrolet Impala. Diamond was transported by a Life-Force helicopter to Scottish- Rite hospital in Atlanta for treatment of two broken legs. The child is in stable condition and a full recovery is expected.
The suspect vehicle was found abandoned on Davenport Street shortly after the incident.
Darius Jamal Strong turned himself in to authorities late last night and was booked into the Polk County jail early this morning. Strong has been charged with serious injury by vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving. He remains in custody at the time of this publication.
