As vacation season ramps up, drivers are on high alert for shopaholics, drunks, lost travelers, and others who have maxed out their attention span. We’ve all seen them. What’s going on here? The driver who blatantly runs a red light isn’t just an urban legend, it is a reality. The new camera ticketing red light systems aren’t everywhere, unfortunately, and that’s where you need to watch out.
While you’re out and about driving, it’s tempting to make a rolling stop, and make that turn before oncoming drivers get in the way. Take a deep breath and stop, look and listen. Are you becoming an out of control driver? Did you just cross an invisible line? Slow down, and have a safe, enjoyable day instead of a nightmare episode beyond your wildest dreams. Tickets in California, for example, are over $450 for a ‘rolling stop’ at a redlight.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Traffic Safety Facts Report, there were over 2.3 million reported intersection-related crashes, over 7,770 fatalities and approximately 733,000 injury crashes in the USA per year alone. The fatalities are over 15% of all traffic deaths in the entire USA. The red-light running crashes alone caused 762 deaths in 2008. An estimated 165,000 people are injured annually by red-light runners. Half of the people killed in red-light running crashes are not the signal violators. They are drivers and pedestrians run down by red-light runners.
