The 2012/13 season for the Blumenthal Performing Arts Duke Energy Broadway Lights series has been announced. Season tickets are now on sale. The Charlotte audience will get to see the spectacular stories from plays such as Jekyll & Hyde, Sister Act, Les Miserables, Wicked, Traces, War Horse and The Lion King. Also coming to Charlotte as Broadway Extras: Cirque Dreams Holidaze, American Idiot and Catch Me If You Can.
The first show in the series, Jekyll & Hyde, will star American Idol and Rock of Ages breakout Constantine Maroulis (Marc Snetiker popwatch.ew.com) and R&B recording artist Deborah Cox, who is best known for her smash hit “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here.”
It seems like the shows Wicked, Les Miserables, and The Lion King love the Charlotte audience and the Charlotte audience certainly loves them! They are back for another round of performances. These shows have graced the Charlotte stage numerous times and it seem as if the audience just can’t get enough.
According to the New York Post Sister Act is “RIDICULOUSLY FUN.” This musical comedy is full of feel good songs that will make people want to get up and dance!
Traces is a new kind of circus that incorporates the energy of street performance into the production. In this show there is skateboarding, basketball, and high-risk acrobatics. This show includes the music of Radiohead, VAST, and Blackalicious.
War Horse has been a sensation on Broadway and now this production gets to treat Charlotte to this epic Tony Award winning adventure. Green Day’s American Idiot tells the story of three lifelong friends forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of suburbia (blumenthalarts.com) as they search for true meaning in a post 9-11 world.
Catch Me If You Can is based off the DreamWorks movie of the same title. No ladies it does not star Leonardo DiCaprio as teen conman Frank W. Abagnale this time.
Sure to be a new family holiday favorite is Cirque Dreams Holidaze, which has “re-invented” the holiday show. This production is sure to delight the audience with its living holiday ornaments and toys performing breath-taking acrobatic feats. Yes, Santa Clause is definitely coming to town, but in a whole new way!
This season’s Broadway Lights series has something for everyone, but please be advised before taking the kiddies to the theater that War Horse is recommended for ages 12 and up and children under the age of 5 are not permitted in the theater for this show. American Idiot has adult content and strong language.
