With premiere week on the horizon, television viewers everywhere are going to be faced with important decisions: What shows should they watch? What shows should they DVR? What shows should they skip altogether to save on that precious DVR space? To help alleviate concerns, this article series will step into the breach. In the coming weeks, television programming for each day of the week will be appraised and rated so all interested parties can decide how to spend their precious primetime hours.
Tuesday nights have the makings of a very interesting night. The reality competition shows will bring another hour of results shows. CBS will trot out its heavy hitting “NCIS” block and premiere new star-studded drama “Vegas.” While CBS does a lot with dramas, the other big networks battle each other with comedy blocks. Even FX will jump into the fray with the return of “Sons of Anarchy.” Unlike Monday, there is no shortage of different viewing options for the shrewd TV viewer.
What to watch live
If you’re not one of the over 30 million people watching the two versions of “NCIS,” your search is going to lead you to some potentially promising comedies. Mindy Kaling has generated a lot of buzz about her new show “The Mindy Project.” It will be put up against Utah’s least favorite new sitcom, “The New Normal” and ABC’s “Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23.” While 9:30 is going to be tough, 9:00 is shaping up to be an interesting clash between incumbent comedies “New Girl” and “Happy Endings” and Matthew Perry’s latest attempt to make us not think of him as Chandler in “Go On.”
The verdict- Give “Go On” a shot. It has some legitimately funny moments, and Matthew Perry is a talented enough actor to make the heavier scenes work. If lighter fare is not your thing, Choose CBS’s “Vegas.” There is a lot of talented television actors on that show. Unless you are plot-committed to “Sons of Anarchy,” Michael Chiklis and Dennis Quaid should give you quite a show from week-to-week.
What to DVR
Here’s where you scoop the rest of the comedies that will be airing on Tuesdays. Most of them are worth a look with the notable exception of “The New Normal” which looks fairly dreadful. Fox’s entire comedy block has the capability to impress depending on the reception for “Ben and Kate.” So far, the reception has been rather warm.
The verdict- Scoop up all the comedies with the exception of “The New Normal.” You’re welcome, Utah. Also, if you are a big “NCIS” fan, you need to save some room for that as well.
What to skip
Feel free to ignore the reality competition results shows. It’s not that hard to find out who was eliminated, and most of the show is pointless filler. Otherwise, Tuesdays is thick with shows worth your time and viewing focus. The one show that hasn’t been mentioned yet probably has the most dedicated audience: “Parenthood.” Intriguing shows come left and right, but there are a few shows that you don’t have to worry about.
The verdict- Make the people of Utah happy and don’t watch “The New Normal.” If you’re still watching “Private Practice” then you should really stop and watch “Vegas” or “Sons of Anarchy” instead. You’ll be so much happier as a result.
What shows are you looking forward to on Tuesdays this fall?
