“Dwightmare” appears to finally be over.
According to multiple sources late Thursday evening the Orlando Magic have traded their All-NBA Center Dwight Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers.
With the Lakers snatching up Howard, the Denver Nuggets receive former Sixers swingman and current 2012 Olympian Andre Iguodala, Philadelphia gets, now, former Lakers’ starting center Andrew Bynum and Magic veteran shooting guard Jason Richardson; and rounding out the blockbuster deal Orlando grabs Nuggets’ shooting guard Arron Afflalo, combo forward Al Harrington, Sixers’ young center Nikola Vucevic and 2012 first-round pick Moe Harkless.
The reported deal is subject, obviously, to approval by the NBA with a trade call scheduled for Friday according to ESPN.
Although Lakers’ starting power forward Pau Gasol was reported to have been linked with Howard in numerous trade scenarios for months, the 7-foot Spaniard remarkably did not have to be included in this deal for it to ultimately work.
However, with Orlando dead set on getting back youth and clearing up substantial salary cap space for the future in a potential Howard deal from the beginning of this lengthy process, the decision made to omit Gasol is not without merit.
Howard still, by all accounts, plans to play out the remainder of his current contract now with the Lakers and look to free agency in the summer of 2013 where he stands to profit a substantially higher payout as opposed to extending with the club.
Orlando is said to also receive three first-round protected draft picks from each team involved in the reported deal.
Howard now joins a revamped and veteran Lakers core of Steve Nash, Kobe Bryant, Metta World Peace, Pau Gasol and newly acquired power forward Antawn Jamison.
