Earlier this month, Ellie Goulding gave fans their first taste of new material: a free download of her cover of Active Child’s Hanging On (which features rapper Tinie Tempah) from her SoundCloud page. This was the first substantial bit of news fans had gotten of her follow-up to 2010-2011 hit album Lights, the title track of which has been soaring up the charts recently.
Just under an hour ago, Ellie Tweeted that she could finally give more information on her sophomore attempt. The record will be titled Halcyon—the album cover can be seen above—and it’ll drop October 8 in the UK and October 9 in the US. She announced as well that the album will be supported by a more substantial world tour. Not only that, but the lead single from the album, Anything Could Happen, will be released on September 30, meaning fans have exactly two months before they get to find out exactly what direction Goulding is heading.
“Halcyon” is a word usually used to mean “tranquil” or “calm”, which conflicts with statements by Ellie last year that the album seemed to be heading to a darker place than Lights did. While we most likely won’t get a full song until September 30, we’ll most likely get a teaser later this week. While she denies that her music has been heavily influenced by boyfriend, EDM artist Skrillex, it’s hard to think it hasn’t at all…not to mention rumors of collaborations with Skrill and house DJs Swedish House Mafia. Whatever happens, we’ll find out for sure in a couple of months.
