You can help celebrate the 199th anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s victory in that battle and the nearly 200 years of peace between the United States and Canada when you attend the Historical Weekend on the Lake Erie Island of Put-in-Bay (also known as South Bass Island) on Friday, September 7, Saturday, September 8 and Sunday, September 9.
Put-in-Bay’s Historical Weekend This family-oriented event is a celebration of history, music and art and offers a wide range of non-stop activities for all ages.
Historical activities include a War of 1812 military encampment with musket and cannon firing demonstrations.
The Grand Parade on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. will feature more than 1200 Boy Scouts (who will have their Camp-O-Ree at the Perry Memorial), classic and antique cars, four high schools bands, local and regional dignitaries, the captain of the USS Lake Erie and 1812 historical re-enactors.
Art in the Park (on Saturday) will take place in DeRivera Park and will offer a variety of area and regional artisans and craftspeople displaying and selling their merchandise including watercolor and acrylic paintings, stained glass, photography, pottery, glassware, silver smithing and woodworking. The artisans will also be giving free demonstrations of their work.
There will be a historical baseball game on Sunday, September 9 between the Put-in-Bay Mossbacks and the Ohio Historical Society Muffins. The game will be played by the original 1860’s rules and starts at 2 p.m.
Science enthusiasts will be able to take a tour of The Ohio State University’s Stone Lab biology campus on nearby Gibraltar Island on Saturday. Visitors can get free transportation to Gibraltar Island from the Boardwalk.
A big attraction at the Historical Weekend is a free concert by the Toledo Symphony on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at the Perry Victory Visitor Center. It is recommended that you bring a cushion, blanket or lawn chair.
And make sure you stay to see the big fireworks display on Saturday starting at dark in the downtown area (Fox’s Dock).

The island of Put-in-Bay is located in the middle of Lake Erie 15 miles from Sandusky, Ohio on the mainland.
