With temperatures outside moderating… you will find more reds in this weeks taste options. There are a couple of Rose’ tastings and two with Chardonnay and White Burgundy as their focus.
Review the list, and visit two or three shops. They tend to cluster, so walking between shops is a great option, while the rain is on vacation.
- This is a great video on how others see Oregon wine, and the surrounding environment. It’s produced by the Atlanta Wine School: AWS visits Oregon Wine Country.
- The second is a good primer on the growing Southern Oregon Wine region. A visit this past weekend made it clear: the Southern Oregon Wine Institute, at Umpqua Community College, is proving invaluable to the growth of this areas wine industry.
Remember, sometimes it takes how someone else sees our incredible wine industry, to remind us how luck we are to live so close to an amazing wine industry, and Southern Oregon is only a weekend trip away, and well worth it. Another beautiful region of Oregon, with beautiful wine as well!
Back home, take advantage of the rain-free weather while we have it! Visit a wine shop Friday, and taste the wine!
Always remember to be safe; here are this weeks wine tasting options for August the 24Th.

FRIDAY NIGHT FLIGHT: Cabernet Franc
Friday, August 24th . 4pm – 7pm . $12 tasting fee*
“One of the famed Bordeaux varietals, for some reason Cabernet Franc gets a lot less love than Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. And yet Cabernet Franc is widely planted throughout Europe and the US and many examples of 100% varietal bottlings can be found at affordable prices.
“For this tasting, we will pour some of our favorite examples from France, Italy and Washington to show off the range of flavor and style Cab Franc can come in. A special bonus pour will help us end our August tastings on a high note.
“Our main flight on Fridays is free for cork club members (limit 2 flights per week, member must be present to use). Bonus pours extra.”

Today Our Friday Tasting —–Mr. Mike will pour:
Gateway 2011 Vinho Verde $9.99 dry white
“This is a blend of Trajadura, Loureiro, Arinto and Azal. The grapes are selected from vineyards within the Amarante sub-region. The wine has an extra dimention of freshness, and is bottled with a little sparkle as is typical of many Vinho Verde. This is a step up from the cheaper brands. Did I mention it’s extremely refreshing?”
Witness Tree 2010 “Willamette Valley” Chardonnay $14.99 dry white
“This Chardonnay is a blend of estate-grown Davis 108 clone, coupled with a bit of Dijon clone fruit farmed at the Stand Sure Vineyard. This is exceptional value in Oregon Chardonnay, from a cooler growing season showcasing the balance between rich elements of tropical fruit flavors with great framing acidity and mineral flavors. This is the best balanced chardonnay from Oregon I’ve tasted in quite awhile, and at quite a fair price. A deal.”
“A-iuto!” Bianco Piemonte 2008 $34.99 dry white
“–produced by “T.E.” (The domaine formerly known as –Trinchero Estate in Piedmont, I wonder who could have sued them over the use of their own family name?) – a blend of 20% malvasia, 60% arneis, and 20% chardonnay produced with a long maceration on skins, indigenous yeasts, and aged in slovenian botti. The Trinchero Estate is located in the Asti hills in the hamlet of Agliano Terme. The winery is based in an early nineteenth century complex which has been in the Trinchero family since the 1920s.”
Cameron Winery 2011 “Ramato” $25.99 dry white
“Here is another “long skin contact in maceration and fermentation” white wine…in other words another local “orange wine” – a complex white wine of refreshing herbal and tonic vibrations. The name of the wine is Italian for copper, ramato: copper-colored. This pinot grigio is made in the tradition of north-eastern Italy. A very tricky wine to pull off, the resulting lovely light orange libation is a blend of complex herbal aromas and stunning mouth feel. Very limited production. Created by a madman, endorsed by Mr. Mike!”
Il Chiosso “Rosso Marconi” 2011 Nebbiolo $9.99 dry red
“A fascinating red from the area north of the Langhe -in Italy’s Piedmonte region. The incredible price is a result of a local distributor direct importing the wine to the Portland area. Wines from this area around Ghemme and Gattinara produce wines that have a higher tone brighter red fruit quality compared to the classic “tar and roses” typical of the nebbiolo from the Langhe area. The wine has a unique bright red fruit aromatic and savory length on the palate, the slight rusticity of the over all package is swept aside by the wine’s unique goodness. This wine is sui generis, and truly autochthonic.”

“Wines from the Sonoma Valley delivered a knock-out punch in our UWW smackdown against those from Napa. So what the public likes.. what our customers want, they get.
“We’re serving wines from Sonoma this week: serious, sumptuous, select, scintillating….and sybaritic.
“So long Napa, Sayonara!

Friday, August 24th
“On the topic of good wine just let me say we DO have some pretty fabulous juice flowing this Friday. I looked back in the archives and realized we haven’t visited the sunny vineyards of southern Italy for about 6 months, aka “way too long”. This is without question the spot in Italy I would like to visit next. Not just for the food, sun, and gorgeous scenery, but also because I know how well I’ll drink there. There is nothing like the wines that come from these vineyards. From Puglia in the east out to the island of Sicily these wines always remind me of the land. Rustic, character-filled, deep, intense, warm. And being the wine roads less traveled you know for the money easily the best values to be had in Italian wine. Come see taste I’ll be, hopefully sooner than late…”

Roses from around the world
Friday, August 24th • 6-9 P.M. • $10 cover
“I’ve been busy with catering and competition BBQ and have not kept in touch. This will be an open weekend for me so I’ll be here to taste Rosé wines with you. Jerry has been wanting to do this so hopefully he’ll be able to stop by too. We’ll try a variety from different regions of the world, so come join us! We’ll still do our 2-glass tasting format with your ratings, but this tasting is just for the “Dog Days of Summer” fun. Now if you can’t live without red wine then show up, try the Rosés and I’ll crack open something from the wine room stash, but you have to show up and get on me about it!”
