There are plenty of events on tap this weekend in Lynchburg. Many of the events are family-friendly but others are more suitable for date night. There’s even one fun event for Lynchburg area dogs.
The Lynchburg Hillcats will finish their last homestand of the 2012 season with games against the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights at 6:05 p.m. Come on out and support your hometown Hillcats with these great promotions.
Friday is Military Appreciation Night with free admission for active and retired military members. It’s also Lynchburg College Night so wear your LC attire for half-price admission. Former WWE wrestler Sergeant Slaughter will make an appearance too. Check out the Hillcats Facebook page for Friday Fan Night coupons and come on out.
Saturday will be Fireworks Night at the stadium with a fireworks show following the game. Fridays is also Football Night so be sure to wear your favorite football jersey for half-price admission. All fans will receive a free raffle ticket for a chance to win prizes.
On Sunday, arrive early for the Fifth Annual Guns and Hoses Charity Softball Game. The gates will open at 3 p.m. with free t-shirts to the first 1,000 fans. Guns and Hoses game time is 4 p.m. followed by the Hillcats at 6:05. Sunday is Randolph College night so show your RC student, faculty or employee ID for $3 admission. There will be a pre-game concert performance by local praise band Pier 19 for Faith Sundays.
Also on Friday, the last TGIF Fridays at Avoca Museum in Altavista will be held from 5:30-9 p.m. with live music by Diamondback. There will be wine tastings and food for purchase and kids 12 and younger are admitted free with a parent.
If you like your music indoors, come on over to Heritage Baptist Church, 219 Breezewood Drive, for a sing-a-long with patriotic songs and hymns by the Young at Heart Singers from HBC and the 50Plus Choir from TRBC. Admission is free for the event, which begins at 7 p.m.
Saturday brings several more fun events. Paws in the Pool is a fundraising event for the Lynchburg Dog Park. Although Phase I of the park is completed and the park is open, there’s more work to be done. Come on out to Miller Park pool from 10 a.m. to noon to watch the dogs paddle and play in the pool. Bring your favorite dog and join the fun. The cost is $15 for dogs and $10 for dog parents. Be sure to bring your dog’s current rabies certificate.
There are introductory canoeing and kayaking programs at Ivy Creek Park on Saturday with advance registration at the Lynchburg Parks and Recreation Department. Ivy Creek Park is located at 118 Clemmons Lake Road, just off Route 221. The canoe program begins at 9:30 a.m. and the kayak program begins at 11 a.m. There will also be canoe and kayak rentals available on Saturday at at Ivy Creek.
Parkway Marina, 16918 Smith Mountain Lake Parkway in Huddleston will be the site for the Smith Mountain Lake Beach Bash on Saturday from 2-9 p.m. This is an adult event with wine and microbrew tastings, live music and shag dancing. Get tickets in advance at the Bedford Chamber or at the gate.
It’s always a good weekend to visit Smith Mountain Lake State Park. The beach is still open at SML so come on out and stay late to enjoy Music in the Park from 8-10 p.m. featuring Snow Creek Band and the Old Dominion Cloggers.
Many parents will be taking their teens back to college this weekend. Although students are already on campus at Liberty University and Lynchburg College, this is move-in weekend at Virginia Tech and many other colleges. If you still have shopping to do, be sure to check out the link below for back to school shopping with your college teen.
Visit Lynchburg Community Market, Forest Farmer’s Market on Route 221 or the Campbell County Farmer’s Market at Brookville High School on Saturday morning to pick up some fresh produce. Farmer’s markets always carry fresh local products. Enjoy music at Lynchburg Community Market from 10 a.m. to noon while you’re there.
Take a walking tour through Old City Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Guided walking tours through the cemetery have been held each Saturday during the summer and this is the final tour. Be sure to use the Wise Street entrance due to construction on Taylor Street.
On Saturday evening, the Downtown YMCA 5K and Kids 1 Mile Fun Run will be held. Register online for this fun event. The Kids run will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the 5K will start at 7 p.m. This is a great way to get some exercise and enjoy a Lynchburg Saturday evening.
