Fishing in the “Dog Days” meant dogs grew mad, burning hot fevers occurred when the star Sirius (also called Dog star) rose in the sky. It is this star that was blamed for the hottest days of the year. Bass are the second most sought after fish in North America known for their fighting stance after being “hooked” during this time of they year. The largemouth bass thrives in water that is too warm or turbid for other game fish that is why it is good fishing right now in Atlanta. Fishing in the rain is like a kid jumping in water puddles, it’s fun when it’s hot out.
Rain was pouring down and the waves were hitting the boat
Rain suits are kept on board that’s the easy part. Fishing in the rain now that takes some balls. You are going to get wet, the rain is hitting you in the face and the water can get rough, but if those teenage girls can sail around the world alone we can go fishing in a lake in the rain, right? Fishing in the rain sounds miserable when you think of it, but in the hot summer and you are fishing dammit the rain is the least of your worries. A fisherman does not get caught by surprise by the rain, you are a going fishing and like the farmer you are always checking on the weather situation.
Biting in the rain
The wind changed direction and there was a bite. Fish move around a lot more in the rain because it is cloudy, in the sun they head for cover. Fish get crazy during a barometric pressure change before the storm, and during the storm they are freaking and eating.
Getting warm in the rain
If it’s summer just jump in the water to get warm, sounds crazy, but it’s true. On the boat you have the wind and rain hitting you keeping you off balance but when your whole body is in the water its gets warm, it’s good. It’s like jumping in a pool to swim the first time it is cold, but the second time you jump in it feels warm. You are already wet on the boat so jumping in will get you warm.
Zero competition and dry feet
When you start out fishing there may be a few boats and people on the banks fishing, but let that rain come down and most of them head for the dry land and get out of the water quickly. Then it is just you, and God and the fishes out there. One of the best investments any mail man or angler can make is a good rain suit. You are going to get wet feet and soaking wet feet. If you prepare ahead of time with some waterproof shoes or boots but another good thing to have on board is shoe covers. Shoe covers can be found in any dollar store and buy them one size bigger than your shoes size to slide over your sneakers. These are good for fishing multiple days in a row because your shoes are not going to dry out the very next day.
The lower end of any lake will usually stay clear or clear up first, and is the place to head to fish while it is raining. If you are fishing a river the water current is going to change and you will get a flush of water down the river. When you are facing muddy waters try lures that will make noise or vibrate and if you have some scent to spray on bonus. Covering more water faster makes more sense in the rain than fishing slower and finessing it. Where do the fish go when it rains, they come up with the water and a reservoir lake will come up a few inches in good rain and a point will become shallows. Fish lures should be lizards, jugs and something horizontal.
