Tonight, Saturday, July 7th at 10pm the #1 record breaking cast Frankie’s Favorite Obsession celebrates their 11th year anniversary performing their Las Vegas version of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” at The Regency Tropicana Cinemas located at 3330 E. Tropicana Avenue in Las Vegas. The original Rocky Horror began as a small musical play written in 1973 by a struggling actor named Richard O’Brien. Written as a tribute to old Sci-Fi and Horror films of the 1950’s with an added sexual flavor Rocky Horror was originally titled “They Came from Denton High”.
The show was pitched to Jim Sharman who made it a workshop project for The Theater Upstairs at The Royal Court Theatre in London. Original cast members included Tim Curry, Patricia Quinn, Jonathan Adams and Chris Malcom and Richard Hartley, Brian Thompson and Sue Blane were on the creative team. “The Rocky Horror Show” debuted on June 19, 1973 in London in front of a packed house that included horror icon Vincent Price.
Following the play’s success in London, record producer Lou Adler saw the show and decided to bring it to the United States. It premiered at the Roxy Theater in Los Angles in 1974 where it garnered more acclaim. Additional musical numbers were added as was singer Meatloaf in the role of Eddie. Many celebrities attended including Elvis and John Lennon and singer Carole King was the first to dress up as a character. Adler then got a movie deal with 20th Century Fox and filming began in October 1974 in England. American newcomers Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon were cast as leading couple Brad and Janet and production began at the Oakley Court Castle in London with a modest budget of 1.2 million dollars. Shooting wrapped in December and the film premiered on September 26, 1975 in Los Angeles. It became a hit in the city, but drew little box office elsewhere at the time. Since it didn’t draw much on a first-run basis, it was re-released in New York and Texas, which was the beginning of its growth as a cult phenomenon. People began performing the film itself and casts were formed. The first Rocky Horror Convention was held in New York in October 1979 with several Rocky celebrities in attendance. Over the next 30 years it has continued to grow and become the top midnight movie of all time.
Frankie’s Favorite Obsession performs the show at the Regency Tropicana Cinemas the first Saturday of every month at 10pm so if you miss tonight’s anniversary come out and share the fun another time or if you’d prefer to join them on-stage keep in mind they currently have positions open and are looking for new talent.
