On July 18, “GMA” shined a spotlight on the YouTube hit featuring two very popular Justins: pop sensation Justin Bieber and Justin Timberlake from NSYNC. A recent YouTube hit mashes together Justin Bieber’s hit single “Boyfriend” from his number one album “Believe” and NSYNC’s hit single “Girlfriend” from their album “Celebrity.” The end result is a YouTube sensation that’s gone viral and is so popular that Lara Spencer featured it on her “Pop News” segment today on “Good Morning America.”
The Justin Bieber/Justin Timberlake “Boyfriend”/”Girlfriend” mash-up video was posted on YouTube on July 13 by Raheem D, who says…
Now before anyone starts Bieber nor Timberlake sound alike. I didn’t create this mashup to defame either of them. I genuinely wanted to mix these two songs because I knew they would go together so well. I’ve waited ages to remix this and I really wanted to make if three months ago but hey. I hope you enjoy it!
There are several similarities between 31-year-old Justin Timberlake’s “Girlfriend” and 18-year-old Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend” videos. Both include classic cars, slick hip-hop dance moves, and many pretty girls seeking the attention of the Justins. In addition, both videos mark a transitional move from teen idol to a more mature sound.
Justin Bieber told MTV that he did not see NSYNC’s video prior to making his own for “Boyfriend,” but doesn’t mind being compared to Justin Timberlake. “He was young and he did it, and he was really amazing and had such amazing music. I can’t say that I would be upset when someone compares me to him,” Bieber stated.
However, the Biebs later appeared on “Mojo in the Morning” radio show and became a bit peeved when asked about the similarities of “Boyfriend” and Justin Timberlake’s “Girlfriend” videos. DJ Mojo said, “When I heard ‘Boyfriend’ for the first time, I thought it was Justin Timberlake’s single.” Justin Bieber testily replied, “Man, that’s crazy because our voices sound nothing alike.”
Bottom line is that the Justins’ voices are indeed very different, but their music videos look a lot alike. When they’re mixed together, the resulting “Boyfriend”/”Girlfriend” video looks and sounds great and is this summer’s latest Internet sensation. More than 100,000 people have viewed the Justin mash-up and the number is rapidly climbing, due to national exposure on TV shows like “Good Morning America.” Be sure to check it out.
