“Witches Bones ‘n’ Whale Skin” is an eclectic and strange gypsy album. The lyrics are at times interesting, such as in the opening track “Isabella” which features the title of the album used in a line. Other songs such as “The Horror” feature lyrics that are kind of over-reaching and broad for a protest themed song.
Vocally the singer sounds very old and defeated, but this appears to be intentional, and sometimes it seems like he’s really playing into that aesthetic (especially in the song “Follow Yer Dreams”). At times he sounds like the lead singer of REM if the lead singer of REM was forty years older and heavily sedated.
Songs like “Pig Skin Hat” chug along with goofy duets and plucky instrumentals, and has the sound of a Vaudevillian classic.
“Witches Bones ‘n’ Whale Skin” by God’s Favorite Beefcake is at times a challenging, and a difficult listen, but always remains intriguing and interesting throughout it’s entirety.
