Other than Mark Zuckerberg, can you think of another person who has become a success from college nights and Facebook™?
D’Andra Simmons is one of those people. Named by her college roommate in homage of their college years and spotted on Facebook by natural product retailer, Whole Foods Market, Simmons’ skin care line – Hard Night, Good Morning™ – found its roots in offering a variety of pharmaceutical grade, aloe vera based, natural skin care products without parabens, sulfates, phosphates, or phthalates.
“I have worked with my mother for the last 15 years in product development and formulation of nutrition and skin care products for her company, Ultimate Living® and Dee Simmons® Skin Care, “ Simmons said. “Hard Night Good Morning™ was the result of my years of hands-on experience in the lab, my meetings with raw material providers, as well as traveling the globe, interviewing countless women about their skin care concerns and researching new and unique ingredients.”
These experiences allowed Simmons to discover that aloe vera has the ability to moisturize, hydrate, sooth and calm skin, while even reducing winkles and dark circles on the face. “Put simply, water evaporates and aloe vera penetrates. Aloe vera acts as a delivery system. If water is your first ingredient in a skin care product, all of the important actives and botanicals are evaporating off of the skin. If aloe vera is the first ingredient, then the essential actives that are supposed to penetrate the skin and be delivered to the cells to do their work actually have a chance to do their job,” she said.
Additionally, Hard Night, Good Morning™ products work to specifically address “the outward signs of aging” by using “clinically proven and tested peptides along with anti-oxidants, and vitamins known for their anti-aging properties.” Furthermore, Simmons also hand-selects every ingredient that goes into her products by meeting with the representatives from raw materials providers and chemical companies.
Simmons said, “I carefully study the cosmetic industry as a rule. I am aware of the most technologically advanced ingredients due to my research and relationships, and I, along with my chemists, hand select the ingredients for their efficacy and performance.” And although she has a BA in Political Science, her “nutrition background and global travels” give her the insight and knowledge necessary to make these decisions.
In addition to her expertise, it’s her motivation that also proves to be a valuable asset in the creation and success of her skin care line. “When my mom became ill with cancer 25 years ago, I began to study and travel the globe in search of alternatives to allopathic medicine. I learned a lot about how to prevent cancer and slow down the aging process, as well as how to apply this information to taking care of the largest body organ, the skin,” Simmons said.
With the encouragement of her family, Simmons decided to “pitch my products to larger retail chains that focused on natural, paraben, sulfate and phthalate free skin care for people that were interested in a healthier lifestyle. This way, I could incorporate my story of being the only woman in my family that has not had cancer, and my history of developing products for my mother and aunt, who were seeking natural skin care products as cancer survivors.”
