Once again, the work of amazing advocates who were determined to help an animal in need has resulted in a precious life being saved. Advocates spotted pictures of Bentley at the Pet Pardons and Urgent Dogs of Miami Facebook pages, and simply could not get the images of his horrifically-burned little body out of their minds. They began reaching out to Jennifer Smith, the President of Noah’s Arks Rescue (NAR), and the road to Bentley’s recovery began. Now, he needs help from advocates in order to get the care he so desperately needs.
This poor little approximately-2-year-old Sharpei/Boxer mix had been at Animal Control in Miami-Dade for a week, after reports of a burned dog resulted in him being picked up. Numerous advocates who saw him frantically contacted Ms. Smith to beg NAR to take him. However, while she believed with all of her heart that another rescue closer to Miami would step up; sadly nobody did.
Meanwhile, poor Bentley was suffering from the agonizing burns that cover his entire back, and he was slated to be killed at the shelter. So, Ms. Smith, doing what she always does, accepted this precious boy into the care of Noah’s Arks Rescue.
Bentley was taken for emergency care in Miami, where he was able to get antibiotics and pain medications for the burns. But then, even more devastating news came about Bentley; he has tetanus. Everyone had noticed that his little eyes were going in the wrong directions, which is one of the signs of this deadly disease. Testing proved that he did, indeed, have tetanus. He did not get tetanus from his burns, but instead from an old untreated dog bite on his leg. From all appearances, this precious boy has suffered from neglect for probably most of his life.
The human who should have been his guardian has claimed that the burns were simply a “rash” from some anti-flea and tick remedy that he had placed on Bentley. However, the veterinarians have stated this does not appear to be the case, since whatever was put on him literally ate through layers of his skin. Thankfully, the person responsible has been charged with cruelty to animals, and a full criminal investigation is ongoing into this horrible case of neglect and possible abuse.
Bentley is now in the caring and compassionate hands of a hospital close to NAR, but he has a very long, painful, and expensive road ahead of him. Because of the tetanus, his life is already is jeopardy, and he requires 24-hour a day care. Add to that the horrific 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns that cover his back, and you can see that the road to recovery for him is going to be incredibly difficult.
NAR only takes in the worst cases of abuse. They make certain the animals in their care get the best possible medical care, and then they help them heal both physically and emotionally, so they can go on to be adopted into loving forever homes. The work they do is simply amazing, and their success stories are so heartwarming.
Please consider making even just a small donation to help with Bentley’s care. This precious boy has clearly suffered for most of his life, and he deserves to heal, and to know that love really does exist in this world for him.
