Howard Stern got into a heated argument with fellow judge Howie Mandel on Tuesday night’s live episode of “America’s Got Talent,” accusing Mandel of ruining chances for real talent like Andrew DeLeon and Mary Joyner in favor of Big Barry, a bizarro novelty act.
“Big Barry,” said Stern addressing the diminutive crooner. “This isn’t about you. This is about Howie and how he treats the show and the apology you owe to Flo Jo’s daughter, to Andrew DeLeon, to all the people that could have gotten through instead of Big Barry. You ruined their chances [by voting through Big Barry]. There was nothing funny about it…And there was a ton of people who had more talent than Big Barry. Last week, I made fun of a guy up on stage here who was playing instruments made with brooms and that kind of thing–and I owe him an apology cause I was a little rough on him, but I’ll tell you what: Howie owes all of those performers who could have had a shot on this stage [an apology]. Big Barry, no offense to you, but you’re not fun, you’re not funny and you’re not talented. It was a big waste of time. Stop the nonsense…Really. It’s offensive.”
Andrew DeLeon was considered by many “AGT” fans as a lock to the “next Susan Boyle”–a huge talent in an unexpected package. DeLeon has cultivated a Marilyn Manson-esque look, but sings classical opera like a pro-in-the-making. Mary Joyner, the daughter of Olympic medalist Florence Griffith-Joyner, was also considered a lock for the final 48, but didn’t make the cut.
Last month, Howard Stern said he was “glad” that he and his fellow judges had made the decision to cut DeLeon after the singer choked during her Vegas Week audition:
“I’m so glad we cut him,” said Stern on his June 27th satellite radio broadcast. “In the final analysis, you’re there to be a judge, and it’s a million dollar prize…He really just completely flubbed the audition, and no one was more disappointed than me, to the point that we went back and replayed it 17 times because we were in shock…Everyone said: ‘Our credibility will be out the window if we put him through’…He went from being Susan Boyle…to, almost, Tiny Tim—like, a joke.” Read the full story here
