I have been laid off five times in the last 13 years. Each time I was laid off, the company was sending its operations overseas to be more profitable, and the employment terminations were not my fault. Each time the severance package got smaller, and the more I had to dip into my 401k and investments. By the fifth lay-off I was broke. I had no savings, no retirement, no stock options, and no medical insurance.
I went on unemployment and struggled downsizing my budget from $1400 every two weeks to $416 dollars unemployment payment plus whatever money I could scrounge up by selling my personal belongings, and I had to dip into the credit cards. I was locked in to a downward spiral. Now I am up to my eyeballs in credit card debt, and two months ago I was dropped from Unemployment. I had depleted my benefits. I no longer even count as an unemployment statistic, and I can’t help but laugh when the news media or the President touts better job growth.
The President and Congress have not created any jobs. They have been throwing billions of dollars at companies in hopes the businesses would use the money to build factories thus creating new jobs. However, this does not work! The fat cats take the money, give themselves huge bonuses, have extravagant boondoggles, outlandish personal vacations, but no new jobs are created. Trickle down programs do not work with corporate big brother. The money goes to the top and stays at the top!
Many years ago, the country was in the middle of the Great Depression. President Roosevelt pushed to have programs established to put people to work creating the much needed national infrastructure. Dams were built, Highways were created, and many conservation efforts were developed for our national parks all through Federal work programs. President Roosevelt put people to work, and he created jobs! He did not wait for corporations to start hiring, nor did he throw money at them. Businesses started growing simply because the Middle-Class was being created and the people had money to spend which made the economy grow.
Today our national infrastructure is worn out. Power grids are failing, bridges collapsing, roads full of pot holes, and people are out of jobs. Remember this the next time our President claims he has created a few new jobs and points out it businesses needs more incentives. Mr. President, quit tossing money at greedy corporate big brother and put the people to work. Fire up the Federal work programs and create some jobs. The people will have money, the businesses will grow, and so will the economy.
