SOME SPECIFICS: BOB DYLAN with MARK KNOPFLER; Wed., Nov. 7, 2012, Xcel Energy Center, W. 7th St. at Kellogg Blvd., downtown St. Paul, MN.
This date was just announced today, July 18, 2012. Time and ticket prices are to be announced very soon according to www.xcelenergycenter.com. This article will be updated as soon as those details become available.
Bob Dylan is perhaps the very definition of the word iconic. His early albums of folk-oriented music inspired other musicians from Joan Baez to John Lennon. A Minnesota native, he was born, raised and educated in this state. He is an alumni of the University of Minnesota, has played here fairly often and has recorded many songs locally. Yet, to this day, he maintains a world-wide audience of fans who follow him religiously.
Dylan’s new album, “Tempest”, will be released on Sept. 11. Mark Knopfler will join the tour in Oct. The current leg of Dylan’s tour features Bob Weir, formerly of the Grateful Dead. More information regarding both legs of the tour can be found at www.xcelenergycenter.com, www.bobdylan.com, www.MarkKnopfler.com and www.ticketmaster.com. Ticketmaster lists no time or price info as yet.
Adding Mark Knopfler to the tour is an interesting and welcome choice. Knopfler, formerly of Dire Straits, is a virtuoso guitarist, a superb songwriter and a master showman. His devotion to the influences of American country music has been obvious to his fans, especially on his solo albums. He formed a country-influenced band named the Notting Hillbillies. He recorded an album with Chet Atkins and another with Emmylou Harris, even embarking on tour with her to promote it.
Knopfler’s vocal style will blend nicely with Dylan’s, presuming they will be together onstage at some time during the shows. Again, little is known about the upcoming shows but they have toured Europe recently. There is audio/visual material from some of those shows available. Minnesotans will welcome the addition of Knopfler.
