Thank you for this interview, Laura. Can you tell us a little about yourself and how long you’ve been writing?
I have been writing nonfiction for over 10 years, and am also the author of Families of Two: Interviews With Happily Married Couples Without Children by Choice and Finding Fulfillment From the Inside Out.
Can you tell us briefly what your book is about?
The Baby Matrix looks at why it is time for us to take a hard look at a set of beliefs that has influenced how we have thought about parenthood and reproduction for generations. That set of beliefs is called “pronatalism.” At its core is the belief that having children should be the central focus of every adult’s life. This book:
• examines the historical origins of pronatalist beliefs
• explains why these beliefs have become so embedded such that people see them as “true”
• scrutinizes seven major pronatalist assumptions that lead people to accept them without question
• offers alternative mindsets that reflect realities, true reproductive freedom and responsibility in today’s society
Whether readers are parents, want to be parents, or don’t want children, after reading The Baby Matrix they will never think about parenthood in the same way.
Why did you choose your particular genre?
I love nonfiction because it involves real world topics, issues and people.
Where do you write? Do you have a favorite place?
I generally write in my office, but I am also very productive in beautiful settings such as a cozy beach house or mountain cabin in the woods.
What was your greatest challenge writing this book?
The more I dug into “pronatalism” the more I saw how embedded the beliefs that comprise it have become. They have become such the norm that people think they are reality. It was challenging to figure out how to structure the book so people would truly understand this, and be willing to look at alternative mindsets that reflect realities in today’s society.
Are you a disciplined writer?
Yes. I treat the regular time I carve out in my day to write like I would a very important meeting or appointment-it is a priority and not to be missed!
Are you published by a traditional house, small press or are you self-published?
I decided to self-publish The Baby Matrix. I worked with excellent freelance editors, an amazing cover artist and experienced publicists to help me develop, fine tune and promote the book.
Was it the right choice for you?
Absolutely. With the digital world as it is today, and with such good editorial, digital and other media publicity experts out there, there is less need to only rely on the assistance of traditional publishers.
How are you promoting your book thus far?
I am promoting on my author site, http://lauracarroll.com, on my book review site, LiveTrue Books at http://livetruebooks.com, and my top blog, La Vie Childfree at http://laviechildfree.com. I am also promoting it on social networking sites and book forum sites, such as Goodreads and MobileRead.
In addition to a virtual book tour, I have a fabulous publicist who is working other kinds of media appearances. The paperback and ebook is publicized at major online bookstores, including amazon, barnes and noble, and itunes ibookstore.
How is that going for you?
So far so good! There is quite the buzz on the book virtually and on the radio waves.
Do you have another job besides writing?
I provide writing and editorial services for individuals (including authors), businesses and nonprofit organizations. I also provide public speaking services, including public speaking coaching and speech/presentation writing and editing.
Have you ever gotten an inspirational book-related moment at work and had to go run and write and it down?
Yes! I always carry a note pad with me to get ideas down when they come to me. I actually got my idea on how to structure the book in a taxi cab!
Do your co-workers know they have a star among them? What has their reactions been?
My colleagues especially love my appearances on network television, including Good Morning America and The Early Show.
If you could give one book promotion tip to new authors, what would that be?
Don’t underestimate the power of digital publicity. There are more ways to get your book out there in this way than ever before!
What’s next for you?
I am doing a longitudinal study right now, and will be for the next seven years. When it is complete, I may very well develop a book based on the results of the study. What’s the study? Well, I am going to keep it under wraps for now, but it involves surveying women who were in their 20s at the start of the project.
In addition to this project, I already have an idea for my next book, but will embark on it after The Baby Matrix tour has settled down a bit—that’s all I’ll say!
